During this time of Hybrid and 100% Remote learning, it can be confusing to know what to do when a child isn’t feeling well enough to attend school, or a parent is erring on the side of safety. Below you will find a list of Frequently Asked Questions about our 2020-2021 school year. What should I do if my child is marked Remote Learning Unexcused Absence, but the student says they attended the online class (on their assigned online day)? If students are marked absent, families should contact the teacher to understand why the student was marked absent. This goes back to our A-B-C style of communication. Students, parents, and teachers should be directly communicating with one another. If there is an attendance correction to make, the teacher will email the correction to the attendance office. What should I do if my child isn’t feeling well on a day they are supposed to attend school, but does feel well enough to attend class online? Students not feeling well they should be kept at home. They can attend classes online without having to be changed to “Remote Learning”. However, parents must call the attendance office (303-982-5771) to excuse their child from in-person classes on those days. Teachers are required to mark students absent when they don’t attend in-person classes, even if the students attend the class online and explain it to their teachers. A parent call is required to have that absence marked as Remote Learning Present. What if my child isn’t feeling well enough to actually take part in the online/remote classes? If your child is in the Hybrid or 100% Remote Learning model, and they are not feeling well enough to take part in their online/remote classes, parents must call the attendance office (303-982-5771) to excuse their child. It would be a good idea to add the attendance line as a contact in your phone. How do I know if my child has been moved to the 100% Remote Learning model? Students that are in the 100% learning model will have an 8th period class titled “Remote Learning” in their schedule. If you don’t see the “Remote Learning” class in your child’s schedule please contact their counselor, and have them add the course. Can I still change my student to the 100% Remote Learning Model? Yes. Email the child’s counselor and let them know that you would like to change the student’s schedule to 100% Remote Learning. This change will be in place for the rest of the semester. Students should contact their teachers and let them know that they have made the change to remote. Teachers will then confirm with the student that they have contacted their counselor and have made the change officially, which can be seen by the addition of an 8th period class on their schedule called, “Remote Learning”. When and how do we make decisions about having our students attend school for the second semester in either the Hybrid or 100% remote model? Parents will be asked to complete a Google Form survey at the start of November to let us know your preferences for the second semester. Parents and students will be expected to stay in their selected Hybrid or 100% Remote model for the entire second semester. Written by: Greg Kottcamp, Assistant Principal My child continues to miss 7th Hour, because they don’t know which class to attend. How can we know where my child should go for 7th hour? (The following information can also be found on the D’Evelyn homepage under “Bell Schedule”.
What is my student supposed to do on Fridays?
While Fridays are remote learning days for all students, students are expected to follow each of their teachers’ instructions for attendance and/or tasks to be completed. If you are uncertain about what needs to be completed and by when, please contact that teacher and ask for clarification. Generally, students will go to each teachers’ Google Classroom to see instructions on what needs to be completed and when. We have had many students trying to submit attendance or work after teacher deadlines, and then asking teachers to correct their attendance. If a student doesn’t meet the expectations by the deadline they will be marked absent. Each department also has office hours for students to get individual help. We encourage students to let their teachers know ahead of time, that they will be stopping by during office hours, but impromptu visits are also welcomed. Here are the department office hours for Grade 7-12: 8:00 - 9:00 AM - Math (Remote students take their math quizzes during 9-10) 9:00 - 10:00 AM - World Languages (Remote student take their language quizzes during 8-9) 10:00 - 11:00 AM - History 11:00 - Noon - Electives Noon - 1:00 - English 1:00 - 2:00 - Science 2:00 - 3:00 - Counseling (Counseling also has an 11:00 - Noon availability) 6th Grade Students in sixth grade are to check teachers’ Google Classroom for instructions on what needs to be completed and when. Students can do math make-up work from 9:00 - 10:00 AM, and their teachers are available for office hours from 10:00-11:00. Written by: Tim Schmeckpeper, AFSC, Assistant Principal Attention students and families. We are pleased to announce the launch of a revised Peer Tutoring Program. The 2020/COVID version will be conducted virtually via Zoom Meetings in the late afternoon/early evening. The program has been redesigned and will be supervised by Ms. Katie Lewis. Ms. Lewis oversaw the Peer Tutoring Program last year, administered the Academic Assistance Center, and also taught several study skills classes. We are in need of several peer tutors to help students who may be struggling in the hybrid or remote learning models. Students, please consider applying your academic skills in service to your fellow students. It will be a rewarding experience. If you are interested in becoming a tutor, please go to the D’Evelyn website, under the Academics tab, and fill out the “D’Evelyn Peer Tutoring Interest Form.” We need several Peer tutors and Ms. Lewis will contact you. Students who are in need of tutoring may also sign-up using the same “D’Evelyn Peer Tutoring Interest Form” found on the D’Evelyn website under the Academics tab. There are two ways for a student to participate in the Peer Tutoring Program: (1) Students may participate on a “drop-in” basis and be assigned to a tutor for that particular day and session for help with things like specific assignments, projects, or test prep. -or- (2) Students may request to be assigned to an individual tutor who will meet with them on a regularly scheduled basis for ongoing assistance. Written by: Ashley Jetton, RN, BSN, District Registered Nurse Now that we are really into this school year and most of us have been directly impacted by Covid-19 within our community, I wanted to take a moment to address some of the most common questions I get regarding Covid and quarantines. A primary exposure is a person directly exposed to someone who is positive or later tests positive (like a day or two following exposure). A secondary exposure is anyone else exposed to the one who had a primary exposure. Those who have had a primary exposure must quarantine 14 days from when they last were exposed to the positive person. Secondary exposures do NOT have to quarantine. Even if your student has a primary exposure, the rest of the family can carry on with normal activities. If anyone in the family chooses to get tested, whether symptomatic or not, the entire family should quarantine until results are back. If a family member tests positive, the entire family should quarantine 14 days. Understanding all of this is a challenge, and it seems like as we continue to learn more about this virus, we adjust how we are handling it. Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions.
