Juniors and senior high students are invited to the CSU campus to shadow engineering students for the day. This includes a private tour of campus, going to some college classes (some may even be classes they take their freshman year), and even touring some of the current engineering labs. This event is free to all of those participating and is a great opportunity for young women to get a better idea of what engineering looks like inside and outside of the classroom. It is also an all-day event, so it gives time for a ton of opportunities to ask questions and to get to understand what college looks like. DEF Scholarship Application Deadline March 30, 2022 Hard copy scholarship applications must be turned in to the Counseling Office (Mrs. McSwain) by 3:00 pm on March 30th, the first Wednesday following Spring Break. All applications, resumes, essays, and supporting documentation must be typewritten. Please do NOT print double-sided when submitting your applications. D’Evelyn Seniors will be vying for 26 scholarships worth $27,750 this year. Additionally, $6,500 in awards will be given out to three seniors (1-$1,500 and 2-$1,000 awards), and one $3,000 award to a D’Evelyn community member. Scholarships and awards total $34,250 this year, the highest single-year total in the school’s history! Interested seniors will find the link on the homepage of the D’Evelyn Jr./Sr. High School website and click on the $ sign with the words DEF Scholarship . You will be directed to the active links for all 26 individual scholarships and the 4 awards. At this meeting we would like to discuss student individual service learning projects and for the group to identify a large community organization or non-profit that they would like to donate money to this year. We are also interested in organizing a school wide community service project which we will also discuss at this meeting. Seventh Grade ICAP - The junior high counselors will be calling students down to the auditorium during 7th hour the week of February 7th - 10th to complete ICAP. ICAP stands for Individual Career and Academic Planning. Students will login to Naviance to navigate through some fun career interest profilers and explore future careers they may be interested in pursuing one day. Kindness Challenge - February is typically a month when we focus on Random Acts of Kindness. Random Acts of Kindness Day will be observed this year on Thursday, the 17th of February. Consider celebrating this day by engaging in one or more random acts of kindness on the 17th. Or celebrate the week by engaging in random acts of kindness all week… let the ripple of kindness grow throughout the community. Or challenge yourself with the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation’s Kindness Challenge. They have “designed a fun kindness challenge to help make kindness the norm™ at home & in your neighborhood. Your challenge (if you choose to accept it) is to complete a series of kindness activities to fill in 60 'hearts'. Our peer leaders are working hard to spread hope, health and strength throughout our community this month and every month. There are paper cranes exhibiting positive messages hidden around D’Evelyn now, waiting to be found! We also celebrate and lift up the strength of Healthy Activities on Tuesday, the 15th of February. We invite everyone to wear the color blue, which is the the color of the Healthy Activities wedge in the Sources of Strength wheel that day and engage in some healthy activity that is a strength for you! Sources of Strength will sponsor two healthy activities that day during 7th hour - a kickball game and a craft activity. The goal is to create the tallest and most sturdy tower in their group. Marshmallows and toothpicks will be provided. The holidays can provide increased time for family, friends, self, and reflection. It can be a time of rest and relaxation. It can be a time of connection and caring for self and others in ways that we have less time for at other times throughout the year. This time of year can also be a time of increased stress and struggle. It can bring added pressures and expectations and difficult memories. There is no singular way to experience this season, but we want everyone to have resources at their fingertips, if needed and helpful. Jefferson County Public Schools provides tons of resources for us on their Jeffco Mental Health and Wellness Hub. Here we can find information about the Jeffco Health and Wellness Seminar Series, mental health resources, information about suicide prevention, community resources, and more. There is a virtual calm room full of tools that we can use to manage emotions and find help in regulating. There is also a fun generosity challenge for us there. Girls Mentoring Friday December 10th is the Girls Mentoring Annual Cookie Celebration. Group leaders will supply the cookies, mentors please bring the frosting and mentees bring sprinkles. We will be having 3 competitions: most creative cookie, most holiday spirit and most comedic. Please go to your classroom first, then head down to the cafeteria for some cookie decorating fun. Boys Mentoring Friday December 10th is the Boys Mentoring Annual Holiday Gift Exchange Group leaders will purchase small (dollar store) gifts for all members in their group. We are asking that all mentor/mentee pairs talk about bringing in a fun snack to share with their group. They could bring in homemade cookies or other holiday treats, or they could bring in a bag of chips. There will hopefully be a ton of food, so the portion sizes do not need to be overly large. The boys will start in their classrooms, and then move to a larger group at the appropriate time. We are very excited to celebrate this year! College Update There will be NO College Visits this week. Seniors, please check your transcript deadlines. It takes time to process your transcripts, allow one week before your deadline. The next major deadlines are Dec 15 and Jan 1st. LIKE Virtual Screening Event - Friday Nov 12th We are excited to offer a virtual screening of the documentary film LIKE next weekend, starting at 5pm on the evening of Friday, the 12th of November, and going into the weekend. LIKE breaks down why we find social media so irresistible, examines who is controlling who, and gives you the tools to pivot to a more balanced and contented relationship. Scholarship Workshop Tuesday Nov 16th Starting on Tuesday. November 16th, counseling will start hosting scholarship workshops. These workshops are intended for seniors who would like some extra assistance on how to find scholarships, tips and tricks for scholarship applications, and to spend time working on scholarships. The counseling office will have a handful of scholarships that have been sent to us directly laid out for students to look at, but because there are thousands of scholarships out there, we will be introducing students to the databases they can utilize to search for scholarships. We will be holding around 8 workshops throughout the rest of the school year, with the majority of them coming in the second semester. Boys Mentoring Meeting Friday Nov 19th Boys mentoring will be meeting the Friday before Thanksgiving break, and the mentor/mentee pairs will be constructing their egg capsules, which they sketched out in our last meeting. The mentor and mentee should have agreed upon what materials they each have to bring to construct the capsule. They are responsible for ALL of the materials. The counseling office will provide the eggs, but we will not have any additional materials. After construction, the boys will head outside where one of our custodians, Ron, will drop them off the roof. The goal is to see if anyone’s egg can survive! Girls Mentoring Friday Nov 19th Girls Mentoring will have a Spa Day on November 19th. Girls will be meeting in their classrooms and doing manicures, face masks and doing a cucumber treatment for their eyes. Girls are responsible to bring nail polish, remover and a face mask if desired. We will provide the sliced cucumbers. It should be a relaxing and fun way to kick-off the Thanksgiving break. Benefits of Gratitude “I don't have to chase extraordinary moments to find happiness - it's right in front of me if I'm paying attention and practicing gratitude.” ~ Brene Brown Gratitude is the state of being grateful; a feeling of appreciation or thanks. Harvard Medical School suggests that gratitude is “a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives… As a result, gratitude also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals – whether to other people, nature, or a higher power.” It is a state we can all find ourselves in, but not one that we all remember to foster and practice as regularly as could be helpful. There has been a great deal of research over the last several years that has shown the benefits of gratitude, which include but are not limited to positive impacts on our well-being, relationships, work, and even our health. Knowing that gratitude can have such a positive effect on our lives may leave us wondering how to best start a regular practice. It all starts with paying attention to all that is going right in our lives. Emmons and Stern describe this in 2013 as “noticing and becoming aware of blessings that we normally take for granted.” They remind us that “practicing gratitude is all about making an intentional shift from the negative to the positive.”
There are many ways for us to increase our practice of gratitude in our daily lives, should we choose to do so. We can notice the positive things/people/interactions in our daily lives, record these in a journal, write to or share verbally our gratitude with others, or a number of other things. If you are having a tough time getting started, you can check out Marie Forleo’s video with what she calls a Gratitude Trick. Jefferson County Public Schools also provided for us a November Gratitude Google Doc with fun ideas, links, and resources. Every student will be required to attend only ONE of the sessions being held the week of 10/18. Students will be called down based on their last name, and the groups will be of 30 students or less. Please encourage your student to attend these sessions, and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the counseling department. New 8th/9th Grade student meeting Thursday Nov 4th during 7th hour On Nov 4th, all new 8th and 9th grade students will be required to meet with the counseling department. We have met with the new students once a month throughout the first semester, and we are now down to our final two meetings. This week we will continue to have students engage in team bonding activities to get to know one another, and we students will form teams to participate in a game that reviews all the topics we have discussed throughout the semester. This provides students an opportunity to ask questions about what they still do not know or would like more information on, and it gives them a chance to meet new people in a fun environment. Our final session will be in December, and we will discuss the topic of finals, and the best strategies for how to prepare for them. Boys Mentoring Meeting Friday Oct 29th during 7th hour Boy's mentoring has spent the last two sessions focusing on mentor/mentee development through sport. Now that the weather is starting to come in, we are moving the activities indoors. This week we will have the mentor/mentee pairs work together to develop a plan for the construction of an egg capsule. The pairs will work together to develop a plan for an egg capsule which they will construct in the following meeting. This is an activity that the boys love, and it is a great way for the pairs to build a stronger connection with just the two of them. Free College Application Day The Colorado Free Application Day has turned into 3 days! The dates for the free application days are October 19-21. A few years ago, the majority of colleges and universities in the state of Colorado decided to find a day in October to allow all of the students in Colorado to apply to their schools for free. This genius idea has saved families hundreds of dollars on application fees. Application fees have creeped up to $60-$75 per submission, so we highly encourage all of our students who are looking to apply at Colorado institutions to apply on the free days to avoid those fees. Students are not allowed to apply for free outside of this three day window, so it is imperative that students start their Colorado applications as soon as possible. Each institution has different steps students need to take to avoid the application fee upon submission, so please click here to be directed to the instructions for each institution. ICAP for Junior high students This month the junior high counselors will be calling 6th - 8th grade students to either the auditorium or the cafeteria to complete ICAP. ICAP stands for individual career academic planning. This is a state initiative that is a multi-year process that guides students in the exploration of career, academic and postsecondary opportunities. Students will be taking various self assessments to gain insight into various careers and they will also have the opportunity to explore their strengths. New 8th/9th Grade student meeting Thursday Oct 14th 7th hour On October 14th, all new 8th and 9th grade students will be required to meet with the counseling department. We meet with the new students once a month for the first semester to help them get acclimated to the school, meet new students to develop relationships, and have them participate in activities that will improve their first year experience. This week we will be focusing on how to get involved at D’Evelyn with all of the different sports, clubs, and organizations throughout the school. Boys Mentoring Meeting Friday Oct 15th, 7th hour Boys Mentoring is up and running! We have had two meetings already, and we are now starting to get into the flow of the school year. Mentors and mentees are starting to develop relationships, and we have seen great bonds start to form in the first two weeks of meetings. We are still allowing new students to join, so if you have a student that you think would be a great mentor, or if you have a student who is struggling with 6th, 7th, or 8th grade, then please contact Mr. Watson or Mr. Northway. We have multiple different activities planned for the rest of the year, and this week we will, weather permitting, look at playing sports and additional activities outside. We are constantly finding activities to keep the boys active and engaging with their mentors and mentee pairs. For future dates, we will have the boys create an egg capsule to protect the egg from breaking when dropped from the second floor and roof of the building. NJHS is meeting Friday October 15th 7th hour - There will be a National Junior Honor Society meeting on October 15th in the cafeteria. Students have been notified of this meeting through google classroom, and it will be in the announcements. Students are to bring their completed Individual Service Project paper with them to the meeting. Don’t forget to get your parents to sign the sheet as well. What are you noticing during your walks? I am happy to recognize most days that I am feeling more relaxed, breathing more deeply, and experiencing a new level of calm toward the end of my walk. I am also noticing the world around me and appreciating the process of becoming increasingly aware… Yesterday, I paid closer attention to the things I heard as I walked. I heard a lot of traffic noise first – car engines revving up and gearing down, tires on pavement, the occasional honk of a horn. I heard a lot of air conditioning units working overtime to cool the interiors of homes. I heard the engines of an airplane overhead… As I continued to pay attention to sound, however, I heard also the laughter of two little boys racing each other down the sidewalk, the rustling of leaves, a bird’s song. I heard a mother giving bike safety instructions to little ones as they rode along, the crunch of dry seed pods under my step, the tinny ring of a bicycle bell. What have you heard, seen, noticed? If you have yet to join our challenge, consider joining with D’Evelyn staff, students, and community members today. Take a walk alone or with someone else. Encourage others to do the same. We can be outside together getting a little exercise, enjoying a little boost, and noticing something beautiful. Have fun! NACAC FAIR Week The NACAC Fairs come to Denver every year, typically around early October. College admissions representatives travel from all around the country to try and be at the same place at the same time. These fairs have hundreds of colleges represented from in-state schools to out-of-state schools. This year the fair will be virtual. The fairs are Oct 3rd, Oct 24th, Nov 14th with over 400 colleges and 500 live sessions. In addition, Nov 2nd is an Art & Stem College Fair. 8th GRADERS
Welcome to your second year at D’Evelyn! Ms. Writz Mr. Northway truly hope you have a happy, successful and productive year. We will be available to help you in any way we can, and you are always welcome to come talk with us about any concerns or problems you may be having. You can even come in and share good news with us! We will be meeting once each semester to work on your Individual Career and Academic Plans. One thing to remember is that it is important for you to continue to develop good work habits and study skills as you prepare for high school. If you would like to talk about this further, please come see either Mr. Northway or Ms. Writz. Also, keep in mind that it is important to enjoy yourself, and the best way to do that is to get involved in a sport or extracurricular activity that you enjoy! We consider it a privilege to be your counselor. Mr. Northway and Ms. Writz 7th GRADERS Welcome seventh graders! This is the beginning of your six year adventure at D’Evelyn! Every year will be new and different and each year will have many opportunities for you to learn and enjoy what this school has to offer. Not only “school,” but there are many clubs, sports, and extracurricular activities for you to become involved with. D’Evelyn requires a lot from its students, but when you talk to upperclassmen, they will tell you that it’s worth it. Please keep in mind that Ms. Writz and Mr. Northway are available to help you with anything that may come up. If you have difficulty in one of your classes, with friends, lockers, or anything please come see us and we can work on solutions together. You can come in and see us before school, after school, at lunch, or during a passing period. You will not be counted tardy anytime you need to see me during part of a period. I consider it a privilege to be your counselor. All seventh graders will attend a program about bullying September 20th-23rd. Students will learn about bullying behaviors, some possible ways of dealing with bullies, why some people bully others, what gives bullies their power, and more. These presentations will be during 7th hour and parents are welcome to attend. Mr. Northway and Ms. Writz 6th Graders Mr. Northway and Ms. Writz are so excited to welcome the 6th grade class to D’Evelyn. We have had a wonderful time getting to know you as we have spent time together working on the Needs Assessment Survey and we also stopped by every classroom to personally introduce ourselves to students and to better define the role of a counselor. Mr. Northway and Ms. Writz are here to help students work through any type of issues, concern, question, or problem that students may have. Students are also welcome to stop the counseling office to say hi or just chat:) As the year progresses, we look forward to spending more time with students and getting to know you all better. |
