Even though college may seem far away, it is never too early to start discovering what type of careers will interest you. Summer is the best time to find internships, begin working, shadow professionals, and talk to members in the community about their careers. NJHS This year of National Junior Honor Society has been a tremendous success for the current D'Evelyn eighth and ninth grade members. Full of innovation, creativity, and service, the 2017-2018 school year saw numerous positive changes building off of chapter traditions. The year began with a change in the way we organized our service projects; instead of separating into small groups, our officers decided instead to allow each individual member to organize and participate in a project of their choice. This approach catered to each member’s strengths and interests and helped alleviate pressure and stress that went along with coordinating schedules and finding transportation for the small groups. Along with the individual service projects, members engaged in large group projects throughout the year. For first semester, we made “homeless bags” to give to those less fortunate in the local community. The idea came from one of our members, Maggie Holland, who had made bags before. The realization that we encounter homeless people just minutes away from our school cemented our decision to try to do something to make their lives a little easier. Instead of money, the bags contained a water bottle, granola bar, fruit cup, crackers and tuna, and gum. The society came together to assemble these bags, and members and administrative staff distributed about 100 bags. Just recently this spring was our second group project. About 10 members participated in the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, an annual drive put on by the post office in which food is left out by mailboxes, and postal workers pick it up on their routes. For about 3 hours, the members of NJHS (along with other volunteers) sorted, lifted, and loaded over 11,000 pounds of food! Not only that, but at the beginning of the school year the society chose the charity Child's Play- an organization that donates toys to hospital-bound kids. Throughout the year, we raised money through our Dairy Queen Blizzard sales and our “World's Finest Chocolate” fundraiser. In both, students worked tirelessly to sell sweets after school and on their own time. By the end of the school year we have raised about $800 dollars and donated it to Child’s Play. This year has been full of hard work; members this year volunteered more than 400 hours of their time to help the community. With the help of Mr. Northway, my fellow officers (Josh McFeeters, Ella Wildman, and Andrew Nguyen), and our members, this year has certainly been a success! We want to wish you all a wonderful and well rested summer! We can’t wait to see you all again next school year. The counseling staff will be out of the office for most of June and July. We will do our best to reply to your questions and concerns in a timely fashion. By Molly Harrington & Jenna Spendlove
