Counseling Calendar
FOR ALL For the 19-20 School year: If you have a sibling of a current student to enroll via the sibling lottery, you will do this using your Jeffco Connect log in information. It will be an Enroll Jeffco link that uses your username and password that you already have for Jeffco Connect. If your new student is currently at a NON-Jeffco school, you can log in and add the new student to your current Jeffco Connect account. The Enroll Jeffco system is scheduled to roll out in January 2019 and we will keep you posted as we learn more. Please call Susan Brown at 303-982-7925 if you have questions or need assistance with your log in information. Jeffco Connect: https://jeffcoconnect.jeffco.k12.co.us/ The Jeffco Public Schools process for choice enrollment application and selection is going to change for this year’s enrollment cycle. The new system will roll out in January 2019. Once we know additional information on the new Enroll Jeffco platform that will be available throughout the district, we will communicate that information. Please call Susan Brown at 303-982-7925 if you have questions or need assistance with your Jeffco Connect log in information. We Are Looking for Candy Donations! As a counseling department we try to make our activities fun and relaxing for students at the end of the day. One of the ways we do this is by engaging them in activities and conversation with prizes to be given away. The most common and fan favorite of prizes is candy. Unfortunately, with the counseling budget candy and other treats are hard to come by. We are looking for candy bag donations for this upcoming school year. After a long day of working in the classroom we want to provide the students with a treat before they leave for the day. We would greatly appreciate any type of candy bag donation. If you can help support our program please drop any candy you have to donate off in the counseling office with Sue Brown, or any counselor available. We want to thank every single one of you for your support! College Visits We still have a few more colleges coming to town and visiting our school. Please be sure to have your students sign up and come on down. The rest of our college visits will be during 7th hour so students will not need to miss class! If you are wondering why students should attend a meeting with our college representatives, here is why:
College visits are available for all students to attend and students need to sign up for visits through Naviance. All students should know how to log on to Naviance. Below are the steps to take to register for a college visit. We want to have every 10th – 12th grade student signup for at least five college visits and every 7th-9th grade student sign up for at least one visit. How to sign up through Naviance:
SENIORS November 15th and December 1st Deadlines The next major early action/decision deadlines are coming up! For those students looking to apply early to hear back early for CU and CSU the deadlines are quickly approaching. Make sure you submit your applications, request transcripts from Naviance, and submit your test scores if your institution requires it. All of that needs to be done by those dates for you to be considered in the early action application pool. If you have any questions on how to request transcripts or submit test scores please come talk to your counselor. Submitting applications over winter break? If you are planning on submitting applications over winter break there are a few things you need to know. First, we want to make sure that you are paying attention to your deadlines. There are some institutions that have deadlines over the break in the early part of January. The counseling office will not be open over winter break, and we will not be here to send your transcripts and additional materials. If you are planning on submitting applications you will need to request your transcripts ONE WEEK before winter break begins. Our deadline for transcript requests will be on December 14th! If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. Scholarships Everyone wants to find a cheap way to attend college. There are a million scholarships out there and the hardest part is figuring out where to start. Counseling will be hosting a scholarship workshop for students on December 3rd. During 7th hour we will meet in the counseling office to go over where to search for scholarships, the DEF scholarships, and give students time to apply for scholarships. We will also introduce students to Going Merry. This is a non-profit organization, created by graduate students from Stanford, to help students through the scholarship process. This program is known as the common app for scholarships. They have a computer system that matches all of the students’ data to scholarships across the country. Students do not have to sign up for this program, however, we believe it will be a great resource for students when looking for scholarships. We will have four more scholarship workshops in the spring, where we will have guest speakers to help explain more about financial aid and scholarships at specific schools. Our series of well-being challenges for students, staff, and community members continues this month with a gratitude challenge. This challenge can be added to your daily walk or it can replace it. The gratitude challenge will give each of us daily opportunities to focus on the positive experiences we enjoy every day. This challenge is quick and easy – during the month of October, record three things you are thankful for every day. This record can be kept where it is most convenient for you – in a journal, on a piece of paper in your wallet, in the notes section on your phone, or any other place you can access it easily and keep track of it over the course of the month. Record big things and little things you are thankful for during your day. Think about the obvious, the things that have gone well, as well as the things that make you smile during the day. If you feel stuck, appreciate the beauty in the world and people around you. Before you know it, the positives will seem more evident to you. This simple practice is actually a powerful tool that helps us to improve our happiness, motivation, and overall sense of well-being. It trains us to focus on the positive, which allows us to recognize more of it in our daily lives. It trains our brains to scan the environment for the positives, and the pay offs are great. Daily gratitude journaling practices have led to increased reports of “positive states of alertness, enthusiasm, determination, attentiveness, and energy” in young adults. Research also suggests that a regular gratitude practice can result in fewer physical complaints, an improved sense of well-being, and an increase in feelings of optimism. Join us this month as we practice gratitude daily. Record your experiences where you wish, and watch your list grow. Share your experiences with your family members, with your friends, online, or with us through the counseling Instagram account. Encourage others in our community to join us in this exercise. Be on the lookout for our next challenge – coming in the month of November! COUNSELING CALENDAR

We need students to begin signing up to meet with the college representatives who are CHOOSING to come to D’Evelyn to meet with all of you! On the D’Evelyn Counseling Homepage we have a link that will take students and families to a PowerPoint, which has a list of all of the upcoming college visits and how to register for a visit. You can also click here to access the PowerPoint. Attending college visits are very beneficial for multiple reasons:
How to sign up through Naviance:
SENIORS For those of you looking to complete your application by the early deadlines the final countdown has begun! The majority of early deadlines fall on November 1st. You need to make sure that you have requested your letters of recommendation, requested your transcripts, completed your essays, and if your school requires it, send your test scores. If you have any questions about how to do this please come see your counselor. You can request your transcripts and letters of recommendation through Naviance. You will need to send your test scores through collegeboard.org (SAT) or act.org (ACT). Scholarships Everyone wants to find a cheap way to attend college. There are a million scholarships out there and the hardest part is figuring out where to start. Counseling will be hosting a scholarship workshop for students on October 29th. During 7th hour we will meet in the counseling office to go over where to search for scholarships, the DEF scholarships, and give students time to apply for scholarships. We will also introduce students to Going Merry. This is a non-profit organization, created by graduate students from Stanford, to help students through the scholarship process. Students do not have to sign up for this program, however, we believe it will be a great resource for students when looking for scholarships. JUNIORS We will be meeting with you all from Oct 15th – Oct. 17th during 7th hour. The day you attend will be chosen based on your last name. If you are unable to make the day you are supposed to attend please attend one of the different days. We will be talking about the college application process, and you all will be admission representatives and decide if students get enrolled to your University. Our goal is to help students learn what colleges are looking for, what do applications look like on their end, and they get to see how the admissions process works. This is a very valuable lesson and students in the past have said this is their favorite counseling lesson we put on. You will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT on October 10th. Please arrive at school by 7:15am so we can get started promptly at 7:30. You will not be able to access your locker or backpack during the duration of the test, so if you need a snack and/or water please bring it with you to your testing location. We have two testing locations: the gym and cafeteria. Please look around the school for the PSAT roster list and find which room you are supposed to be in. We have handed out student guides that have practice problems and tips to help students prepare. Khan Academy is also a wonderful resource to help students prepare for the SAT. SOPHOMORES We will be meeting with you all on Oct 8th, Oct. 9th, or Oct. 11th. Listen to the announcements for the day that you are required to come to counseling. If you are unable to make it on your day please let us know and attend a different day. We are very excited about this new lesson we will be doing with you all. We have received information from students over the years saying that they do not always feel prepared for “real life” after high school. We have created a game/lesson that will hopefully help you all start to think about what “real life” can look like. We will be talking about finances, budgeting, real world scenarios, and working through some difficulties with peers. We have called this lesson The Game of Life, yes after the original board game. This will be a very fun lesson, and hopefully encourage you all to start thinking about the world outside of academics. FRESHMEN Freshmen will be required based on their last names to counseling on Oct. 22nd, Oct. 23rd, or Oct. 30th. You will need to attend one of these sessions even if you are unable to make it on the day you are required. The purpose of this lesson is to help introduce you to the college process and world. We play the college admissions game and talk about the importance of extracurriculars, classes, personality, references, and everything else that starts in 9th grade. Our goal by the end is to help you all notice the importance of being a well-rounded student and that grades are not the only thing colleges look at on applications. We will also be completing a personality trait assessment to help students understand their strengths and what careers relate towards their strengths. |
