As a D’Evelyn school community of students, faculty, staff, and families, we are incredibly fortunate to have the support of the D’Evelyn Education Foundation (DEF). It has been an honor and privilege for me to serve the DEF Board of Directors for the past 7 years, both in my role as AP and now as principal. My work on this board has been rewarding and fulfilling, as I know the steadfast commitment DEF maintains for supporting the success and wellbeing of D’Evelyn students and staff. My belief in the immense benefits provided by DEF inspired my family and I to establish the Joseph & Lena Mae Griffin Excellence in History scholarship in honor of my paternal grandparents. We are in the process of raising the money to fully fund this annual $1,000 scholarship for one D’Evelyn graduating senior in perpetuity. As a family, we feel this is one small way that we can give back to the D’Evelyn community and support our great students forever. While your contributions and interests may be different from those of my family, I hope that you will consider how you and your family can support DEF both this year and into the future, as we have an incredible opportunity to strengthen our support for current and future D’Evelyn students. While the DEF Board of Directors is in the process of reviewing and approving the 2022-2023 budget, DEF is currently in the midst of finishing out the year with the $132,000 approved budget. Among the many aspects of the school that DEF has supported or will support with funding during the 2021-2022 school year, I highlight the following: · the construction of the D’Evelyn new weight room to begin usage for PE classes and D’Evelyn athletic programs in August 2022 · the purchase of uniforms and equipment for multiple D’Evelyn athletic programs · the purchase of new equipment & materials for the D’Evelyn vocal & instrumental music programs and the theater program · the distribution of $15,000 in DEF-funded scholarships for the Class of 2022 · the full funding and organization of After Prom, a safe, fun post-Prom event open to all D’Evelyn juniors & seniors · the funds for multiple teacher professional development opportunities along with teacher recognitions and celebrations · the support of students through Outdoor Lab tuition assistance In addition to these important components of DEF, the board consistently supports the acquisition of new textbooks and technology to support learning and teaching in our great school. In brief, the funding and support provided by DEF is instrumental in the wellbeing and success of D’Evelyn students, now and well into the future as we continue to invest in resources that will support many generations of D’Evelyn students. There are three basic ways that D’Evelyn families and community members can support DEF. The first opportunity to support DEF is through our fundraising efforts. As you have likely received or will soon receive an update regarding our Annual Campaign, this is an important time and opportunity to contribute to DEF fundraising prior to the conclusion of the 2021-2022 school year. No contribution is too small as we look to broaden and enhance our support for students and teachers within this school year. Families interested in contributing can do so online here or by mail to D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School, 10359 W. Nassau Ave, Denver, CO 80235, ATTN: D’Evelyn Education Foundation. Please make checks payable to D’Evelyn Education Foundation. DEF has established the goal of raising $75,000 during this campaign - I appreciate those that have already supported the campaign, and I am grateful to those that will contribute between now and the end of the school year. The second great opportunity you have to support DEF is through volunteering. The Board of Directors seeks interested volunteers to serve on the Board and in many different volunteer opportunities in support of fundraising and community building events. Please see information below regarding potential volunteer opportunities heading into the 2022-2023 school year. The third opportunity you have to support DEF is to participate in their scheduled events. DEF organizes multiple events throughout each school year geared towards raising funds and building community at D’Evelyn. This year, we are thrilled to bring back the D’Evelyn Golf Tournament. For those interested golfers, please save the date for Friday, June 17th, where DEF board members have organized a community golf tournament at Arrowhead Golf Course starting at 2:00 PM. More details will follow, but we hope that you will consider saving the date for this fun community-building, fundraising event! Additionally, DEF volunteers are already hard at work planning the 2022 D’Evelyn Dash, scheduled for Saturday, August 27th. The D’Evelyn Education Foundation (DEF) – HELP NEEDED URGENTLY DEF is looking for parent volunteers to help with the important work of supporting the activities of the Foundation. Our organization is based on service to our community and run entirely by parent volunteers. Thank you for your continued support of your student(s) and our great school. By: Jenna Spendlove, Executive Director, DEF "A day spent helping no one but yourself is a day wasted.” Abraham Lincoln It is always important to take time to recognize and demonstrate appreciation for those who have given so much to our D’Evelyn Community. Longtime board member and volunteer, Ralph Spencer, has recently resigned from the D’Evelyn Education Foundation. Ralph has donated countless hours over the last 20 years in supporting and enhancing D’Evelyn. He first served on the Steering Committee when his daughter, Hannah, entered D’Evelyn and completed two three-years terms. He then became a Foundation Board Member where he has served as DEF Treasurer and participated in managing the Foundation Scholarship Program. He wrote monthly articles for our weekly newsletter, Jaguar Tracks, and organized the Ice Cream Social for many years during parent/teacher conferences. He and his wife, Janet, have also established and funded a $1,000 scholarship honoring a graduating DHS senior who will enter a college or university with the goal of majoring in one of the many medical fields offered in today's institutions of higher learning. Ralph has been so generous and conscientious about working behind the scenes to support and encourage our D’Evelyn students. The D’Evelyn community is grateful to Ralph for his generosity, both for his volunteerism and financial donation and for his unwavering support for our school community. Thank you! “In my 19 years at D’Evelyn, few individuals have dedicated as much time, support, and care for our school as Ralph Spencer. Ralph has been involved in Steering Committee, Accountability Committee, and the D’Evelyn Education Foundation during his 20+ years of involvement in the school. He is a true champion of D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School. I’m grateful to him for his support and leadership in both the D’Evelyn and Dennison community, as his all-around dedication to ensuring that D’Evelyn continues to be an amazing school for students forever!” - Josh Griffin, Principal "Ralph has an attention to detail which has made him an invaluable asset to the DEF Scholarship Program. He has grown the monetary awards to a record amount of $34,250. Last year 99 individual applications were submitted, another record amount! With his guidance the application process was streamlined making it easier for students to apply. Revision of the overall Synopsis was completed, and a new checklist created. Ralph personally drives the Scholarship materials to the homes of the Scholarship Award Committee members, thus making it easier for the volunteers who graciously read volumes of essays and applications. His fairness to each student and the program is exemplary. In addition to his countless years as a volunteer (since 2008), he has donated funds for a medical scholarship and at times filled in funds for underfunded scholarships. His enjoyable personality and get it done attitude have grown the Scholarship Program immensely. The time Ralph and his wife, Janet, donate to the program is a gift to the past and present students of D’Evelyn." - Kim McSwain, Counseling Secretary "I would like to personally thank Ralph Spencer for being my colleague, mentor, and friend. When I began working for the D'Evelyn Education Foundation as their bookkeeper, Ralph was always there to help me out and to answer my questions. He did the little things to make my job easier, like sign the checks and run to the bank to make deposits for me. He also did the more demanding things, like being the liaison between DEF and the investment company. Ralph loved D'Evelyn and served on the Steering Committee for many years, and then on the Foundation's Board for many more. His dedication to the school is unsurpassed, and I will miss him (and his very white mustache!). Thank you, Ralph, for everything you've done for me. I truly appreciate it." - Jamie Durkin, DEF Financial Officer “Ralph has given so much to the D’Evelyn community through his generosity and his volunteer efforts. I have witnessed his willingness to jump in when he sees a need, time and again, over the years. He gets the job done without a lot of fanfare or need for recognition. I have appreciated what an amazing friend Ralph has become while serving with him on both the Steering Committee and the D’Evelyn Education Foundation. Ralph is one of the most loyal and dedicated individuals I have ever met. When he commits to a project, he is all in and doesn’t waver from his dedication and active support. He truly has a heart of gold.” - Kay D’Evelyn La Montagne, DEF Board Member From left to right: Jothi Ravindran, Jennifer Bountry, Ann Freimuth, Ralph Spencer, and Janet Spencer

The D’Evelyn 2021 Junior/Senior ‘Great Gatsby’ themed Prom took place on the evening of Saturday April 24th, in tents constructed on the lawn to the South of the School. The Prom Committee and the D’Evelyn Education Foundation After Prom committee helped Student Council with preparation and planning, responding to frequent COVID related challenges. Parent and staff volunteers worked tirelessly in the weeks preceding the event to gather door prizes, gifts, and food and drinks for the students to enjoy. A Caricaturist and photo booth were available to help capture the moment. The Prom was made possible by the hard work of the Student Council, Assistant Principal Dan Willie and the rest of the Administration along with the parent volunteers for their diligent work in overcoming the unique challenges of this COVID environment. Special thanks to Shannon Willis, the DEF After Prom Coordinator, Jason Ornstein, Sherry Cronin, and Jenna Spendlove. Many thanks to all the volunteers who made the event amazing! The evening was a huge success, and a great time was had by all. In compliance with Jeffco School District and County health guidelines, students were welcomed with numerous safety protocols before accessing the tents with a dance floor and various games. |
