By Josh Griffin, Principal
In my role as principal, it is a privilege to serve as a member of the D’Evelyn Education Foundation (DEF) Board of Directors, and I am grateful for the remarkable support the Foundation provides D’Evelyn students, faculty, and staff. Within the framework of my role as a member of the board, I am happy to present our “Quarter Century, Quarter Million” campaign on behalf of the D’Evelyn Education Foundation. In celebration of our 25th year of excellence in liberal arts education, and the plethora of achievements D’Evelyn students have met both inside and outside the classroom during the school’s history, the Board is committed to ensuring that our excellent program will continue to be strong for many years to come. In the spirit of that commitment from DEF, the Board of Directors has launched its “Quarter Century, Quarter Million” campaign, with a stated goal of raising $250,000 throughout the 2018-2019 school year. DEF already raised over $10,000 in its successful D’Evelyn Dash last month and will continue with its fundraising through the Annual D’Evelyn Dinner Auction and the Annual Giving Campaign. Additionally, plans are underway to expand our reach with the 1st Annual D’Evelyn Education Foundation golf tournament in the late spring or early summer of 2019. The “Quarter Century, Quarter Million” campaign is designed to satisfy not just the $80,000 annual DEF budget, but also address our 2018 Special Appeal. When the goal of $250,000 raised is met, DEF will be able to fully fund our 2019-2020 budget, our 2018 Special Appeal, as well as additional needed projects that support D’Evelyn students. The Foundation will use a 50/50 fundraising model, where 50% of all money raised throughout the course of the year will be dedicated to the Special Appeal, and 50% to the DEF general fund to be allocated to the myriad of programs supported by DEF. The 2018-2019 Special Appeal for the D’Evelyn Education Foundation is the renovation of the D’Evelyn Main Gymnasium. As a community hub within our school, the Main Gym serves the needs of the D’Evelyn community in a multitude of ways. Over 400 students per day participate in PE class throughout the year, utilizing the Main Gym each day. The gym serves all members of the D’Evelyn High School volleyball, girls basketball, and boys basketball programs, as well as the junior high feeder teams for each program. We also utilize the Main Gym for numerous important community events, including Back to School Night, Prep School, New Student Orientation, and Pep Rallies. Finally, due to unpredictable fall and spring weather, the Main Gym is frequently an indoor practice facility for both fall and spring sports. Both the gym floor and the bleachers are original to the construction of the “new” campus for D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School, which opened in August 2001. After 18 years of frequent, consistent use, on a year-round basis, both need updates for reasons of functionality and style. Because of the broad base of students impacted by their access to and usage of the Main Gymnasium, we hope to engage the full D’Evelyn community in their support for this important project. The D’Evelyn faculty, staff, and administration are in the early planning stages of the potential design concepts for the Main Gymnasium renovation. However, we can share that as part of this renovation, we plan for the following work: · A full refinish of the gymnasium floor, including updated court design and artwork · Installation of modern stadium bleachers, with the potential to add elements of D’Evelyn-themed designs; additionally, these new bleachers will allow D’Evelyn to comply with ADA standards for gymnasium seating · Installation of new wall pads with custom D’Evelyn-themed designs · Additional improvements to gymnasium dividers and basketball hoops · Incorporation of new artwork for walls around the gym Renovation efforts would occur over the summer of 2019 for students to enjoy beginning next school year. In the upcoming weeks and months, we will share additional details about the campaign, and will engage the D’Evelyn community for input on design possibilities for both the gym floor and the bleachers. The first way D’Evelyn families - past, present, and future - can support this campaign is by attending or supporting the D’Evelyn Dinner Auction on Friday, November 9th. Volunteers are planning a great evening to celebrate 25 years of excellence at D’Evelyn with dinner, dessert, door prizes, and a silent and live auction. On behalf of the D’Evelyn Education Foundation, please accept my most heartfelt thank you for your support of this important community initiative. The Foundation is dedicated to supporting all D’Evelyn students in academics, athletics, the fine and performing arts, and an array of other activities. Your support of this campaign will support the success of current and future D’Evelyn students. Comments are closed.
