Every year in my 8th Grade US History classes, students draw a political cartoon to represent the post-Civil War Reconstruction era. The era features political fighting between Lincoln (soon assassinated in April 1865), President Andrew Johnson, and the Radical Republicans over the fate of America. Whilst this infighting occurs, the fate of the recently freed slaves is somewhat forgotten and sidelined. The era has some successes, but much was left undone. All the students do an excellent job with the assignment. This work is the finest cartoon turned in this year, by 8th grader Mia Beinecke, and I wanted to recognize it and share it with the D’Evelyn community. Comments are closed.
