Thank you to all students, parents, families, and faculty members for your participation in our Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences. It was great to see such a strong turnout and the resulting engaging conversations between D’Evelyn families and teachers. I am grateful for the shared commitment to academic growth and excellence in our school community.
Additionally, I am looking forward to an exciting 2019 D’Evelyn Homecoming Week beginning Monday, September 30th. Thank you to the D’Evelyn Student Council, Student Council co-sponsors, Jon Watson and Valerie Battaglia, and AP Dan Wille for your efforts in organizing what assuredly will be a great week for students, teachers, staff, families, and alumni. We have an array of events and themed dress days scheduled throughout the week of September 30th, culminating in the Homecoming Game on Friday, October 4th, and the Homecoming Dance on Saturday, October 5th. Additional information regarding the details of Homecoming Week follows in this week’s edition of the Jaguar Tracks. Please accept my sincere best wishes to all D’Evelyn community members on an excellent, fun, and safe Homecoming Week.
Finally, I have some important new information to share with the D’Evelyn community regarding the enrollment process for the 2020-2021 school year. I share this broadly within our community to ensure all families are informed, but also to ask for your assistance. Please share the following information regarding enrollment, and the important dates associated with enrollment, with friends, family, and community members that may have interest in D’Evelyn for their student(s) in 2020-2021.
Two weeks ago, I published this article regarding the addition of the new D’Evelyn 6th grade program for the 2020-2021 school year. It provides an overview of our plans for the new 6th grade program.
An essential component of the continued success of D’Evelyn is our enrollment process. School choice is an important responsibility for all families. D’Evelyn offers a unique educational model for its students in grades 7-12 and will add a philosophically aligned 6th grade program designed to support students with continued success in the already established 7-12 program next year. It is important for families of interested and current students to ensure that they understand and support the D’Evelyn philosophy prior to enrollment. We ask that all families read and remain familiar with the D’Evelyn Founding Document.
Our Prospective Student Information Nights are an excellent venue for families to learn more about the D’Evelyn philosophy, the operating principles and values of the school, and the day-to-day operations that allow our school philosophy to live for students, teachers, and families. All families with students interested in attending D’Evelyn should attend one of our Information Nights (December 12, December 19, January 7 for those interested in HS, and January 9). Each of these sessions begins at 7 pm in the D’Evelyn Auditorium.
We are excited to announce the 1st Annual D’Evelyn Open House for interested students/families, which will occur on Saturday, November 9th, from 9 am - noon. Families that attend this event will be able to:
The purpose of the Open House is different from the purpose of a Prospective Student Information Night. While the Information Nights provide a comprehensive overview of the school philosophy, academic program, extracurricular offerings, and operational procedures, the Open House will include brief presentations about the school, in a much more interactive manner. We encourage students interested in attending D’Evelyn, along with their parents and families, to join us for this exciting event.
It is my sincere hope that the combination of Prospective Student Information Nights and the D’Evelyn Open House will provide interested students and families a clear understanding of the D’Evelyn program, and the amazing impact the liberal arts curriculum, structured learning environment, and dedicated faculty and staff have on the lives of our students. The D’Evelyn liberal arts program is challenging but has a rich track record of success in producing young adults prepared for life.

Our annual fall Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday, September 25th and Thursday, September 26th in the D’Evelyn gymnasium. The conferences are held in an arena format, so families may meet with teachers on a first come, first served basis. We do encourage students to attend conferences to engage in thoughtful conversations with teachers.
The schedule is as follows:
Wednesday, September 25th 5:00 - 7:30 pm
Thursday, September 26th 3:00 - 5:30 pm
Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences are earlier this year than in prior years, to avoid scheduling conflicts with Homecoming Week. One benefit of this earlier week for Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences is that it allows for conversations to happen earlier in the school year, and should help us all identify if additional support is needed for a student. Conferences will occur before the end of the first six-week grading window concludes on Friday, September 27th. Parents are still encouraged to review their student’s grades in Parent Portal prior to the conferences.
The purpose of the Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences is to allow parents and students the opportunity to connect individually with their teachers. There are a variety of opportunities for conversation points presented by the conferences, including but not limited to:
There are no appointments or set schedules for meetings; rather, parents and students will have an opportunity to meet with teachers on a first-come, first-served basis throughout the evening. Please bring a copy of your child’s schedule for use during the conferences. We will not be distributing copies of schedules during conferences.
In order to allow all families an opportunity to meet with teachers, we ask that conferences are kept to a maximum of five minutes per teacher. In the event that you need more than five minutes of meeting time with the teacher, please set up an appointment for a future date and time. During conferences, counselors and administrators will also be available to meet with parents and students as well.

We appreciate and rely upon your support in order to maintain high academic and behavioral standards for all of our students. Parents and families play an important role in the success of D’Evelyn students. We are grateful for your commitment to supporting your student’s success in our liberal arts program. The new D’Evelyn 6th grade program will begin in the Fall of 2020. I am excited for the opportunity to welcome the new group of students of the inaugural 6th grade class to our school next August. It is my sincere belief that the addition of the new D’Evelyn 6th grade program is an important change that will strengthen our school into the future. Given the transition of Jeffco Public Schools to a grade 6-8 middle school model, it is important for D’Evelyn to offer students a transition to 6th grade at the prevailing common time of transition throughout Jeffco Schools.
I know that this change will accommodate the needs of many D’Evelyn families with elementary-aged students. I am also confident that this change will attract the interest of families from outside the Dennison/D’Evelyn community, as the Jeffco secondary school search now begins for most families in our community after 5th grade.
However, it is important to draw a clear distinction between the reasons for the addition of the D’Evelyn 6th grade program, and the nature of the D’Evelyn 6th grade program. While the district transition to a grade 6-8 middle school model support the addition of a 6th grade program at D’Evelyn, that district transition was made for different reasons than the D’Evelyn transition. D’Evelyn seeks alignment with district protocols for grade-level transition, but D’Evelyn Steering Committee, faculty, staff, and administration maintain the responsibility of designing the D’Evelyn 6th grade program.
The D’Evelyn Steering Committee, in collaboration with Dennison and D’Evelyn teachers, parents, and students, will spend the 2019-2020 school year developing the D’Evelyn 6th grade program in a manner that aligns with the D’Evelyn school philosophy, the very successful Dennison Elementary Program, and the existing D’Evelyn 7 - 12 academic program. We intend to design a rich, traditional 6th grade academic program that will provide our new 6th graders with an outstanding academic and personal foundation for future learning in the D’Evelyn program.
With the significant change of adding the 6th grade program in August 2020, I take the responsibility of educating and updating D’Evelyn families as a significant component of my work for the 2019-2020 school year. The process to develop the new D’Evelyn 6th grade program will require significant time and effort from many members of the D’Evelyn community. Specifically, there will be numerous textbooks, curriculum, and hiring subcommittees that run throughout the school year. I am hopeful that many parents will be interested in serving on these committees and will attend our upcoming Accountability Committee meetings to acquire the necessary information and training. In particular, the October 8th Accountability meeting will feature important training for community members interested in serving on textbook and curricular committees in the 2019-2020 school year. I am happy to report that the 2019-2020 school year is off to a great start at D’Evelyn. The students and teachers are deeply engaged in meaningful teaching and learning, and our students, coaches, and club sponsors are well underway into the fall sports and activities seasons. I am grateful for the efforts of all D’Evelyn community members towards a successful start to the school year.
Often, the period in school between Labor Day and Thanksgiving can be challenging. The intensity and homework expectations of classes increase, there are more large tests and assignments, and historically, there have been few extended weekends or breaks for our students and teachers. I know that the upcoming weeks will challenge our students; however, I am confident that the meaningful academic engagement that lays ahead will serve our students well over time.
We are fortunate to have had some changes in how the school schedule is set up for this year. I am grateful that the 2019-2020 school calendar built in more time for teacher work days and 3-day and 4-day weekends for our students, in addition to the traditional holiday breaks that we enjoy in the first semester. Long weekends are a great time for students and families to have an extended break from the typical routines of the school week, but they also present a great opportunity for travel. For our high school students in particular, extended weekends serve as a great opportunity to visit colleges and universities. I hope that the additional days off schools will serve the needs of our students, families, and teachers very well.

In addition to the days off scheduled that align with the Jeffco Schools calendar, in April 2020, D’Evelyn will be taking a unique approach to our CMAS standardized testing plan. On April 3rd and April 17th, 2020, we will administer the English and Math CMAS tests for students in grades 7 and 8. On those two days, high school students will not have school. My vision is that this adjusted schedule will allow us to complete standardized testing in a more efficient manner, and that the high school students will benefit from the additional days off. We will share more details regarding the standardized testing plans after Winter Break.

I am excited to share information about an important new program we have developed at D’Evelyn for the 2019-2020 academic year. Beginning next week, we will start our new Study Hall and Academic Assistance Center programs under the supervision of Mrs. Katie Lewis. Mrs. Lewis is a member of the D’Evelyn Class of 2010 with previous experience as a classroom teacher. We are fortunate to have a person and teacher of Mrs. Lewis’ caliber as a member of our faculty.
Study Hall is an in-school class developed for students in need of additional support with their academic and organizational skills. The class will focus on reading and writing, as well as the associated academic and personal skills needed for success at D’Evelyn. At this time, the program is designed to serve students in grades 7 and 8. In order for students to enroll in Study Hall, they will need to change their schedule and reduce one elective course.
D’Evelyn faculty, counselors, and administrators will work together to identify students that would benefit from Study Hall and will communicate directly with parents regarding recommendations of students to enroll in Study Hall. Students struggling with test performance, homework completion, academic and organizational skills, or overall performance may be considered for placement in Study Hall.
I am confident that this new program will provide additional support needed for D’Evelyn junior high students that are struggling with their academics. The purpose of the program will be to support these students by teaching and re-teaching essential content, developing the vocabulary and reading skills of the students, and providing support for better organization and academic skills. I am looking forward to the positive impact this new program will have for our students.
Academic Assistance Center is an after-school program for students to have a quiet time and space for additional academic support and tutoring. The hours of the Academic Assistance Center will be 2:45 pm - 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday on all full-length school days. This program is also designed for 7th and 8th grade students but will also provide quiet space and time for high school students upon a referral basis. Teachers will recommend students for the Academic Assistance Center, and D’Evelyn counselors/administrators will communicate with families when referral to the program is recommended. We also encourage parents to contact your student’s counselor/assigned administrator if you believe that this program will be beneficial for your student.
Additional 7th Hour Programming will be offered by Mrs. Lewis throughout the year for students. In an effort to provide students with the education and practice they need to develop skills for success in our challenging school, these programs will offer students additional support in scheduling, time management, and organization. Please follow the D’Evelyn student and parent announcements to hear about these valuable sessions for our students.
The D’Evelyn academic program is rigorous by design and is expected to challenge students in a manner that prepares them for life. We are proud of the great accomplishments met by students during and after their time at D’Evelyn. The new Study Hall and Academic Assistance Program were designed to support students with the struggles they face as they acclimate to D’Evelyn in their junior high years. My hope is that this additional support will provide more D’Evelyn students the skills they need to find success during their time in our school.
