By Keith Beams The D’Evelyn Charles Mummert Citizenship Award is given annually during the May awards ceremonies to students who best exemplify honesty, integrity, respect for others, responsibility, kindness, and service. The award is given to the top 5% of each grade level and is determined via independent teacher nominations, with all Jr High students last year receiving at least three separate nominations and all Sr High students receiving at least 2 separate nominations. It is a difficult award to earn and a very prestigious distinction. These are the people that we want as students, as co-workers, as employees, as neighbors, and as friends. I hope that we can all aspire to the individual character that collectively makes us great. We are free, which demands that we in and of ourselves have the moral compass to be good, to treat others with kindness, grace, and justice. This individual freedom, rightly enacted, makes society itself a blessing to all. In the words of Laura Ingalls Wilder in Little Town on the Prairie: “This is what it means to be free. It means you have to be good.” (p.76) The winners from the 2017-2018 school year are as follows: 7th Grade: Autumn Davis, Aishani Dutta , Charlotte London , Conor Taylor, Kira Van Der Steen, and Giselle Wipper. 8th Grade: Camille Anderson, Aliza Bochner, Trinity Cathers, Luc Dryden, Maggie Holland, Sydney Kyler, Grace Li, Samantha Ng, Ethan Pankow, Carter Smith, and Logan Spendlove. 9th Grade: Bethany McCullough, Josh McFeeters, Megan McFeeters, Andrew Nguyen, Matthew Nguyen 10th Grade: Sam Belmonte, Dax Dalberg, Abby Durkin, Holly McCullough, Harrison Sodia, Campbell Stack, Erin Williams 11th Grade: Dominic Cushnie, Taylor Gustafson, Alan Li, Shiloh Miller, Emily Smith 12th Grade: Kelly Franson, Lauren Hastert, Ryan Wilson Congratulations to all the winners from last year!
