This a reminder to all families that D'Evelyn will have a 2-hour delayed start this Thursday, February 2nd. This late start along with the remaining late start scheduled on May 4th is part of the negotiated agreement between Jeffco Schools and the Jefferson County Education Association (JCEA). On these days, the 2-hour delay bell schedule will be followed and the school store will be closed.
By: Lisa Bell, Track Coach
We are very excited about the 2023 track season! We want to invite all high school students to join the Jaguar Track & Field team this spring! We are a no-cut sport that offers an opportunity for all athletes to improve during the season. Athletes work with supportive coaching staff who encourage them to practice and compete to their fullest potential. There is an event in which any athlete can excel and find success without any previous experience. Please visit the DHS T&F website for information on our team store, pre-season clinic, and season schedule! Our student informational meeting is on Monday, January 30th during 7th hour in the library!

All D’Evelyn juniors are automatically registered for this assessment as it is provided by the Colorado Department of Education. However, students have the option of taking the SAT with essay and must register for this through their online College Board account by February 16. Contact Assistant Principal Wille with questions ([email protected]).

Here is the latest in our search for a new principal. The district posted job ads across well-respected, higher education websites in December and January, and they successfully attracted nearly a dozen, experienced applicants for our Principal opening. The PHC met mid-month to discuss the pool of applicants and based on the application materials, resumes, educational philosophy statements, transcripts, and letters of recommendation, the Committee narrowed the pool to four, highly qualified candidates. The four candidates interviewed with the Committee, on Wednesday. Following those interviews, the PHC overwhelmingly selected one candidate to move forward in the process and had hoped to hold focus groups with the community today. As you may know, the job market is hot right now for job seekers (there are more openings than qualified candidates), and our chosen candidate has decided to pursue another job offer outside our district. While we are disappointed, we are all on Team D'Evelyn and there is no quit in us. How many times have we seen our Jags struggle, work their tails off and come out stronger on the other side? That is part of the D'Evelyn Difference - I am inspired by our student's hard work and grit and our talented staff who help them on their journey. We will keep working to find our next leader and we will not compromise until we have found the right fit for D'Evelyn. We will provide updates when we have next steps, but in the meantime, we are reposting the position on the Jeffco schools site and elsewhere, and we encourage you to refer any qualified applicants to apply online or email their interest to [email protected].

This year she has been a huge help as we have a lot of newer students participating and she is very quick to offer help to the new students, sharing her experiences and knowledge. She is also always very well prepared and excited, coming with a great attitude and excitement for the activities of our club. The coaches can count on her to help out when we need to, and her insight into the cases and legal analysis we have to do for mock trial is great. I will say, I wish I had more colleagues in my legal profession that had such a great work ethic as Diya has. -Mr. Andrews, Mock Trial Coach

More than stats, she plays with a basketball IQ that is unmatched in the girl's game. Her court vision and anticipation on defense make her an invaluable player. On and off the floor, she is the unquestioned leader on our team; unanimously voted captain by her teammates. She also looks for ways to involve the younger players in our program and wants to include everyone. Always a “team first” leader, Rebecca has helped guide her team to an undefeated 13-0 overall record, the best start in school history! Her team also won championships at Mountain Vista/Rock Canyon, the Jeffco Jungle Jam, and the Palisade Winter Classic tournaments. We wouldn’t be the same team without her on-court play and her off-court personality. Thanks for all you do, Rebecca! Congrats! -Coach Olson, Head Girls Basketball Coach
Ava Anderson - 12th Grade
When Ava Anderson dives into the water, she is a game changer in a race for the AquaJags. As a senior, she is versatile in every stroke and distance, having qualified for 3A State in every individual swim event in which she has competed from the 50 Freestyle to the 500 Freestyle to the 200 Individual Medley. As the high-point leader on our team, she is a pivotal anchor leg on our highest-ranking relay that currently stands in 3rd for 3A schools. Her leadership does not stop at the pool edge. She models for the rest of the team how to constructively evaluate her races and adopt the changes needed in training. Her perseverance, calm but positive attitude and drive will ensure her future success both in and out of the pool. -Coach Carpenter, Head Girls Swim & Dive Coach

Now that we have a few weeks of the new semester in the rearview mirror, this is a good time to shift our thinking to the early stages of planning for the next school year. I remind all of our stakeholder groups (students, parents, faculty, and staff) that we value your input and feedback as we go through the many planning activities for next year. These include the choice enrollment process, scheduling for next year, budget development, and much more. Completing these projects includes creating forums for stakeholder input. The opportunity to provide input and feedback happens in many ways. Soon we will launch our series of annual surveys. Please see below for more information about how stakeholders can provide feedback on our planning and efforts to make our school a better place. D’Evelyn Accountability Committee Surveys Each year, the D’Evelyn Accountability Committee surveys D’Evelyn families about their experiences in the school. We hope to ascertain valuable feedback from our families regarding the school year, and encourage all families to take some time to provide their feedback, both positive and constructive. Thank you in advance for your time in completing this survey. Parents/guardians have the opportunity to provide feedback based on the unique experiences of their students, which is helpful in our reflective practice as a school administration. Please look for future communications with regard to the exact timeline and access to the stakeholder surveys. The following is the general timeline for each survey:
Additional Parent Input Opportunities An opportunity to hear an overview of the 2023-24 budget development will occur during the February 15th School Accountability Meeting. I encourage you to attend this meeting. Finally, I encourage you to consider the opportunity to be part of the Parent Focus Group with the principal finalist candidates. The Honor Roll is an important way that students are recognized for their academic achievements at D’Evelyn. The Honor Roll is broken into four categories and is based on the grades from the fall semester of 2022-2023: (weighted grade point averages are used in these calculations).
If your child’s name is missing, on the wrong list, misspelled, or you have any questions about the Honor Roll, please email me at [email protected]. Parents of Honor Roll students should visit the main office to pick up their “D’Evelyn Honor Roll Student” bumper sticker. Congratulations to all students that earned an Honor Roll recognition. Your work ethic and dedication to your studies are applauded by our community.

The PHC is happy to report that the job ads that were posted across the country over the past month were successful in attracting nearly a dozen, highly qualified applicants for our Principal opening. The deadline for applications was Monday of last week and the PHC met last Wednesday to discuss the pool of applicants. Based on the application materials, which included resumes, educational philosophy statements, transcripts, and letters of recommendation, the Committee narrowed the pool to four candidates who will interview with the Committee, in-person on Wednesday, January 25th. Following those interviews, the PHC will select the candidates who will move to focus groups with our community. Due to the confidential nature of the hiring process, details and identities of our applicant pool will not be shared with the community until the final candidates are selected for the focus group phase. Focus groups, which are tentatively planned for Monday, Jan 30th, are the community’s opportunity to interact with and ask questions of the final candidates. Three separate focus groups will be formed, one each for teachers/staff, students, and parents. The admin team is coordinating the student focus groups. If you are a parent/guardian of a student and you would like to attend the focus group with the candidate finalists, please complete this survey so we can coordinate with you. Once the PHC has gathered and analyzed community feedback from the focus groups, we will hopefully have a clear picture of who we will hire. If there isn’t a consensus, we may hold additional interviews. When the PHC has decided, the PHC will vote and then the Steering Committee will vote to approve. We will then present our selection to the District for final administrative paperwork and other items related to the Jeffco hiring process. The Steering Committee will continue to communicate through Jag Tracks as we proceed through the process. If you have immediate questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Steering Committee via email at [email protected]. Items left in the gym locker room last semester have been taken to lost and found in the front office. The items are marked by locker number. Students have until Wednesday, January 25, to retrieve their items. Unclaimed items will be donated. Senior High students interested in taking AP classes during the 2023/24 school year should consider attending the AP interest information sessions being held this week during 7th hour.

I hope that you and your family have enjoyed a restful three-day Martin Luther King Day weekend. With such a rapid start to the first semester, I am sure that the extra day of rest will be valued by our students, faculty, staff, and families in the weeks to come. As mentioned in my previous messages, the 1st Round Choice Enrollment closed this past Friday, January 13. While I know most of our families have committed to remain at D’Evelyn, I want to reach out to the families who are considering a change of schools for next year. First, I want to iterate that any family still has time to consider the options for school next year and any transfer out of D’Evelyn is not finalized until a formal offer is accepted in the EnrollJeffco App. With that said, I want to use this opportunity to showcase the many outstanding elements that make our school one of the top-performing schools in the country and the top-performing school in Colorado. Consider the following:
While I could go on about what makes our school an absolutely outstanding school in many ways, I think I would be preaching to the choir. I do hope that as families consider options for school in 2023-24 that you remember much of what initially attracted you to D’Evelyn. Faculty Lounge Improvements Do you have a knack for sprucing up and decorating an old, tired space? Then you might be our person! Recently, a grant was awarded to D’Evelyn Jr./Sr. High School for the purpose of making some minor renovations to our staff lounge. With the grant and a plan of action approved, we need some help to complete the actual work. We are seeking parent volunteers who might have some of those decorating, designing, and Do-It-Yourself skills. If interested, please contact Jennifer Lillibridge or Suzanne Roberts for more information. Support the D'Evelyn Athletic Program on January 17th by participating in the Chipotle fundraiser at Chipotle in Southwest Plaza (8100 W. Crestline Ave, Denver, CO 80123). 33% of the event sales are donated to the D'Evelyn Athletic Program. Show this flyer in the restaurant or order online for pickup using code (PYEKLKX). The Counseling Department has 5 new scholarships available. Interested Seniors can find the application links for all scholarships in the Senior Google Classroom.

Even though last week was a short week, it was great to be back with the students, faculty, and staff, launch the 2nd semester, and look forward to all the events and activities ahead. Below you will find some reminders and a quick look at events on the horizon. Enrollment for the 2023-2024 school year - A final reminder, the deadline for the 1st Round Choice Enrollment process for all Jeffco Schools is January 13. You may access the district enrollment platform via enrolljeffco.org. The January 13th deadline is essential for prospective families interested in D’Evelyn for their student(s) in 2023-2024. It is also an important deadline for families considering any Jeffco school next year. Generally, the 1st round choice enrollment placement process is the most likely time that a student will be admitted to any school in the district. We encourage all families to be thoughtful in their school choice decisions for the 2023-2024 school year. Upcoming Events
Support our Teams We are in the middle of the Jeffco 4A League Season for girls swim & dive, girls basketball, and boys basketball. Please review our D'Evelyn Sports/Activities Calendar to find opportunities to support our student-athletes.

“Six Buckets.” The D’Evelyn Education Foundation (DEF), as the non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the entire D’Evelyn Community, has created these 6 buckets to assist with the needs of the school and allow you, as a donor, to decide if you want your contribution to go to one of these buckets. Those 6 buckets are Athletics, Capital Improvements, Performing Arts (which includes marching band, orchestra, theatre, and choir), Scholarships (including teacher support and Outdoor Lab), Technology, and Textbooks / School Supplies.
In past years, DEF has partially funded technology needs such as computers for the computer lab and classroom technology; athletics' uniforms and equipment; performing arts’ new instruments and audio/visual equipment; as well as replacing aging and outdated textbooks and supplies.
Graduating students have received 10’s of thousands of dollars in scholarships and teachers have earned professional development funds as well as monetary awards. D’Evelyn has a new gym floor, weight room, and music room in part through the support of D’Evelyn families and their donations to DEF. In addition to these 6 buckets, DEF also provides funding for Boys & Girls Mentoring, Teacher Appreciation activities, Mock Trial, After-Prom, and Junior High Social Committee. DEF funds the Jaguar Tracks and Parent-Teacher conference dinners for school staff. D’Evelyn Administration determines the needs and priorities for DEF funding based on the requests from coaches, faculty, and activity/club leaders. DEF tries extremely hard to raise enough funds to cover as many requests as possible. But we are not currently able to fund every request. We had a very successful Dinner Auction, but each of the 6 Buckets has priority requests that we just can’t fulfill at this time. Our students and teachers need your help. Please help us fund all these needs! There is no other tuition-free program that can compete with what D’Evelyn offers. No contribution is too small and a donation from every family would show community support for our exceptional school as we attempt to raise $96,000 during this year’s Annual Campaign. Please make your check payable to “DEF” and mail it to the school or contribute online via develyneducationfoundation.com. We thank you in advance for your generous contribution and ongoing support!

The Forensics/Speech and Debate team started the season with a strong showing during the first semester. With only 5 team members to start the competitive season, the Jaguars roared loudly. On November 19, they competed against 35 other metro-area schools at Eaglecrest’s Raptor Rumble. Welcome Back! I hope that you and your family enjoyed the Winter Break and had a very joyous holiday season. I am looking to start the 2023 year and lead the D’Evelyn community through our 2nd semester of the school year. It is always refreshing for me to welcome back students after an extended break, as we have the opportunity to renew our work and reset our goals with a fresh start to a new semester and new year. January and February have now become an important timeframe for students and families as the enrollment process for the 2023-2024 school year is in full deployment. As a reminder, all D’Evelyn families must read and review the following updates. EnrollJeffco Update All families need to use this system to let us know where their student(s) will go to school next school year. All families should access EnrollJeffco whether your student(s) is re-enrolling at D’Evelyn, choosing to change schools, or seeking enrollment at D’Evelyn for the first time. This should be completed no later than January 13, the closing date for the first round EnrollJeffco process. Other Important EnrollJeffco Dates:
For more information, refer to the EnrollJeffco web page. As an option school, D’Evelyn is uniquely impacted by the EnrollJeffco system. Our students are enrolled in a 100% choice process. We ask all D’Evelyn families to ensure that they have entered younger 5th and 6th-grade siblings in the D’Evelyn lottery in EnrollJeffco by the January 13 deadline date. This will help ensure the sibling preference priority. This is also critical for our new Dennison families to ensure your priority preference for currently enrolled 5th and 6th grade Dennison students. Additionally, please share these expectations with friends and community members you know with interest in D’Evelyn for their children who do not currently attend our school. First Days of the 2nd Semester For those few students who need to make up final exams, you should make these arrangements with your teachers to do this on Wednesday, January 4. Students will return to school on January 5, and we will resume classes on our usual bell schedule. It’s a short week of school for us all, but I expect we will adjust to our routine in short order. I know I share an excitement and eagerness to see all of our students later this week and the anticipation of a great start to the second semester!
