It’s official – October Count Day this year is Monday, October 3. Once again, we are upon that annual statewide event called the “October Count”. At this juncture as a parent of a Junior or Senior high student, this is not your first October Count. As a reminder, the most important action you can take to support our school funding is to make sure your student attends school on October 3. Although, I do ask that you follow the current post-pandemic protocol and keep your student at home as needed. The “count window” the state observes is from Monday, September 26 through Monday, October 10, but the most important student count day is Monday, October 3. Please help us ensure an accurate count by having your student participate in learning that day. If your child will be absent on Monday, October 3 due to illness, call our attendance line, 303-982-5771 to report the absence. Attendance during the “count window” will help counteract an absence on Monday, October 3. The importance of attendance will have a direct impact on our 2023-2024 school year funding. Much of public education funding from the State of Colorado is based on the October student count so we encourage you to be sure your child engages in school that day. Thank you for your support of D’Evelyn. Every child counts! School Safety and Security Update Speaking of school funding and budgeting and student count, it is no secret that Jeffco Schools has experienced a decreasing trend in student enrollment across the district in recent years. I want to assure you, however, that your students and our campus remain safe and secure. I credit this largely to our diligent efforts toward our safety and security practices as well as some recent upgrades to the facility. Our School Response Team, which is a team of staff members that oversee and conduct our emergency response, is well trained and we have been conducting the routine training, security checks, and drills as required by local agencies and Jeffco Schools Security. Since our opening, we have conducted two fire drills with very satisfactory results, and are currently planning our annual Lockdown Drill to be conducted in October (more on this at a later date). As part of the 2018 Bond/Mill Levy projects approved by voters, D’Evelyn has added cameras and upgraded our video surveillance system. And most importantly, we have redesigned and updated our secure entry point at the front entrance of the school. We are also privileged to have a full-time School Resource Officer, Greg Everhart, a Jefferson County Deputy Sheriff. However, with all this happening, due to budget reductions and workforce shortages, D’Evelyn was reduced from two Campus Supervisors down to one. While this has not compromised our campus safety and security, it has put an added demand on our front office staff. This added demand is specifically related to the priority of staffing our secure entry area. Many parents have positively commented on the added level of security as you are initially “buzzed” into the front vestibule and then have to provide identification and reason for entering the school before being admitted to the main office or front lobby. This process requires the security check-in window to be staffed from 7:30-3:30 every day. In the past, this was mostly handled by our two Campus Supervisors. I present all of this information as I do not foresee Jeffco Security in the position to staff us with a second Campus Supervisor anytime soon. The option being considered by the administration is to staff the security window with parent volunteers. This is in the early stages of planning, however, we are seeking the interest of parents to determine if this is even viable. If you are interested in volunteering your time and learning more about the time and training commitment, you are invited to complete the interest survey linked here. Again, I assure you that your student's safety and security are my priority and our campus is in good hands with our current security team SRO - Deputy Everhart, Campus Supervisor-Bob Byerly, and the D’Evelyn faculty and staff.
Student pictures have arrived and are available for pickup in the main office. If you have not already ordered pictures online, the picture packet in the office will contain ordering information. Picture retakes will take place on Tuesday, September 27. The ordered picture packet will need to be returned at the time of retakes.
Student ID Cards have arrived and can be picked up in the main office. Students who purchased an activity/sports pass need to confirm the pass is indicated on their student ID. If an activity pass was paid for as part of your student's school fees and not indicated on their ID, the Financial Office can provide a sticker. Payment will be required at the gate of sporting and activity events if the Student's ID does not have the activity/sports pass sticker.
The math department has 17 extra TI-inspire II calculators for sale. To purchase one, students can bring a check for $132, made out to DHS, to their math teacher, or Mrs. Weber, by next Friday, September 30. First come, first serve!

D’Evelyn values the importance of a safe learning environment where all students are held to rigorous academic and behavior standards to ensure that all students succeed in our program. With this, we strive to effectively communicate the expectations all our students are held to both in the classroom and as representatives of our proud community. For this reason, students were presented with the Code of Conduct (12 min:44 sec video) at the beginning of the semester. Part of this presentation included having students complete a digital version of the Academic, Behavioral, and Locker contracts. We believe by adhering to the expectations outlined in these contracts we can create the optimal environment conducive to child development. We request that you spend some time with your children discussing the importance of appropriate behavior at school and academic honesty. Also part of this presentation was the review of Standard Response Protocols in the event of an emergency. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s administrator. Students and families are expected to be familiar with the Jeffco Schools Code of Conduct. Thank You to the Community! The administration would like to extend sincere thanks for the support received thus far from community members reporting concerning behavior. Thanks to several tips provided by students and parents/guardians we have been better able to uphold our high behavioral expectations. We appreciate all the help from those who report concerns about what might be happening within our community. If you have a concern or information about inappropriate actions taking place in our community, please contact a member of the D’Evelyn administration, counseling team, or security personnel, or make an anonymous report using Safe2Tell Colorado.

Counselors take this survey very seriously and follow up with students individually based on how students respond to the survey. The survey should only take 30 minutes or less to complete. We will meet once a month in Ms. Young’s room, providing a space for everyone! Congratulations to the Heart of D’Evelyn winners for the month of September. The Heart of D’Evelyn Award is intended to recognize students who exemplify the core values that we find in D’Evelyn’s Founding Document. These core values are Responsibility, Honesty, Self-Control, Kindness, and Fairness. These winners were chosen by their teachers based on their actions and behaviors in class, the lunchroom, and the hallways.
Reagen Harbeck: 11th Grade
“Reagen is a great leader. She is willing to jump in at any point. She has been wonderful in yearbook helping to train students how to use the camera, giving feedback on their templates, and without being reminded, she's taken photos at many events. She is a great example of what it means to have school spirit, as well. She took the time to make shirts for the Juniors playing Powder Puff, dressed up every day, encouraged others, and was a joy at the dance.” -Ms. Choun, Math Teacher
Brody Wilson: 12th Grade
“Brody encompasses what we want a D'Evelyn student to be. He is a strong student, he participates in a variety of athletic and activity programs throughout the school, and he is always willing to express his joy and support for D'Evelyn. If there is an after-school activity/game, Brody is there cheering on his classmates. He goes out of his way to mentor younger students, and he sets the example for how to be successful and have fun at the same time. I have leaned on Brody this year to help spread school spirit and engagement at D'Evelyn, and Brody has led the charge. I couldn't be more proud of the leader that Brody has become. He truly encompasses what it means to be the Heart of D'Evelyn.” -Mr. McCaslin-Hahn, Athletic Director

Homecoming 2022 I am happy to share that last week we concluded our Homecoming and Spirit week with a Jaguar win (40-7) against Faith Christian Academy last Friday night. Congrats to our Jaguar football team! For more on all the fun and celebrations last week, see the update from Mr. McCaslin-Hahn in this issue of Jag Tracks. Jeffco Schools and Other Updates District Late Start Days About two weeks ago, Jeffco Schools Superintendent Tracy Dorland, sent out a community message about changes to the Family Calendar for this school year. In this communication, two items were presented about added non-students days and added late start days. First I want to clarify that the added non-student days have no impact on the D'Evelyn Jr/Sr High School calendar. These added non-contact days are strictly for elementary and K-8 schools. However, the added late start dates (October 27, February 2, and May 4) will have an impact on our School calendar. These dates are part of the negotiated agreement between Jeffco Schools and the Jefferson County Education Association (JCEA). Because of this agreement, all Jeffco Schools will institute these late start days into their school calendars. Option School Busing Update Jeffco Schools transportation continues to add bus routes to restore bus service to all neighborhood schools and eventually to Option schools, including D'Evelyn. My last communication with the Executive Director of Transportation, Greg Jackson, is encouraging. With the recent graduation of seven newly hired bus drivers, Mr. Jackson was hopeful that all neighborhood school bus routes would be restored. This then elevates the restoration of Option School routes to the next priority. The goal is to hire nine more driver candidates, complete the required training, and assign them to Option School routes by the end of October. I am hopeful for this timeline and I will update the D'Evelyn Community of any progress or changes. All information can be found here if you or someone you know might be interested in becoming a bus driver for Jeffco Schools. Construction Project Update My last update is related to our new academic wing (the Northeast Wing) which primarily houses our 6th-grade students and teachers. You may have heard about a poorly functioning HVAC system. I can verify that in our first weeks of school the system was not functioning satisfactorily, but recently the issue was identified and corrected. Please understand that we moved very quickly to be able to occupy this space at the start of the school year. As it stands, there are several small to medium items that need to be addressed. This is not unusual for a newly constructed space and in due course of time, these items will be completed. While I hope we have corrected the HVAC issue, I won't be surprised if another issue arises, this is how it goes sometimes with a large project such as this. By the end of September, we should see the completion of the project's exterior (primarily landscaping) portion. Be assured that our Facility Manager and our Jeffco Schools Construction Project Manager monitor these issues daily and will continue to do so until we are fully satisfied with the full completion of the project.

I want to thank everyone for a fantastic Homecoming Week. It was packed with community building festivities during and after school all week long. There were athletic contests, informational meetings, community building events, and celebrations that reflect all the incredible things that are going on at D'Evelyn. Although it was only 5 days, which included Saturday's events, it felt more like a month's worth of activities. But this is why we all choose to be at D'Evelyn. We do all things a little better than the rest, and Spirit Week is another example of this. Thank you all for going above and beyond to make this week special for our community! Although everyone in the D'Evelyn community played a big role in making Spirit Week special, I would be remiss if I didn't give a special shout out to certain individuals who did so much work behind the scenes to make it all happen. Thank you to the entire D'Evelyn Student Council, and especially Co-Presidents Julianne McCollough and Aishani Dutta, for planning the entire week. They have been working since last spring to come up with themes, fundraisers like the In & Out food truck, community building events like Powder Puff and the Skate City night, and decorating the school. They even planned and ran the entire Pep Rally. Thank you to Student Council sponsors Val Battaglia and Jon Watson for your guidance during this time. Thank you to Jodi Bolam and the entire Facilities crew for setting up, cleaning, and managing all of the requests from all of our groups this week. Nothing could happen at D'Evelyn if you didn't do your amazing work keeping D'Evelyn maintained and ready to use. You have one of the hardest jobs in the school, and we can't thank you enough for all that you do. I hope everyone can catch their breath as we enter a normal week of school. Thank you for all that you do to make D'Evelyn the best school in the state. Have a blessed day. Go Jags!

Congratulations to the Athlete of the Month winners for the month of August. These winners were chosen by their coaches based on their leadership qualities, work ethic, and other traits that represent what D'Evelyn wants to see in all of their Student-Athletes. They were chosen out of all the Student-Athletes at D'Evelyn. Jordan Laraway (12th Grade) "Jordan is a strong and influential leader both on and off the court. She leads vocally and by example, continually pushing herself and her teammates to strive for better. She shows commitment in both her academics and athletics and she's a true competitor which is one of the many reasons we love having her in our program. I believe that Jordan's work ethic will help push our program to a great 2022 season!" -Coach Haun, Head Girls Volleyball Coach
Easton Robberson (12th Grade)
"Easton Robberson has been playing golf all four of his years at D'Evelyn. Going from where he was at as a freshman until now is why he is deserving of recognition. Easton has consistently shown up to events with a positive attitude, a commitment to improving, as well as showing the younger kids on the team the right way to practice and carry themselves. Over the past four years he has improved tremendously and has worked on improving over the summer each year. Besides that, Easton has always handled adversity with his head held high on and off the golf course. His respectable approach towards golf and his teammates cannot be overstated and he will be truly missed on the golf team next year." -Coach Boswell, Head Boys Golf Coach

The D'Evelyn Youth Basketball Association helps develop our youths' interest and abilities in basketball by organizing teams and coaches for 2nd-8th grade students. Those teams play in area leagues and tournaments at varying levels. The coaches are given training and guidance by our High School coaches. Team Placement (Tryouts)
Season Details The season runs Nov - Feb. Practice, game, and cost details depend on the age, team, and league. Coaches Most of our coaches are parent volunteers. Please note if someone is able to help during registration. Please feel free to share this info with other players that might be interested in playing. Contact [email protected] with questions. The High School Fall Play, Puffs will be showing September 15 thru September 17 at 7pm. Puffs is the story of Wayne Hopkins, a regular boy who finds out he's a wizard and goes to school in England where he makes two best friends and has adventures. This perhaps sounds familiar, but Wayne is sorted into the Puffs. Starting Tuesday, Sept 6, tickets can be purchased during lunch. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $10 or $5 with a student id.

As a D'Evelyn graduate, I have a unique perspective. I experienced the Founding Document before I read it. Reading the document after graduating from D'Evelyn in 2012 was a powerful experience. It was not merely an outline for how a school should be structured, but rather a six year period of my life described in one succinct, thoughtful, and thorough document. It outlined from beginning to end the opportunities I was provided throughout my time as a student at D'Evelyn. In reflecting on the overarching themes that I took away from my education at D'Evelyn, I ended up with these 9 statements. During my time at D'Evelyn, I developed the following skills and abilities:
In reading the document, it came to life for me that every bullet point that I was able to pull from experience had been clearly anticipated and outlined by our founders. They deliberately laid out a path that every D'Evelyn graduate would take; they took the time, not to simply start a common school, but to start an uncommon school that would lay a solid foundation for all of its students. They knew that their program would impact a student's entire life. In returning to D'Evelyn I have the privilege of passing this foundation on to my students, your children. My colleagues and I deliver the core body of knowledge to your students day by day and year after year to prepare them for the world beyond our walls. You have given your children an incredible gift by enrolling them at D'Evelyn, a gift that I am excited to give my daughter, too. While there will be challenges and hard work, your student will graduate with the knowledge and ability to be successful in any future pursuit. I would encourage you to take the time to carefully read through our Founding Document, even if you have read it before. If you are a parent of a current D'Evelyn student, I would ask you to take the time to discuss it with your student. Tell them that D'Evelyn is preparing them to be a productive and engaged member of society with the power and potential to make a difference in the world. Help them see how in each of their classes, both current and past, that they are now one step closer to reaching that final goal: not simply building knowledge but also building strong character. If you are a parent of a D'Evelyn graduate, ask your child to reflect on the overarching takeaways learned throughout their time at D'Evelyn; compare them to the Founding Document. And as a parent, be proud of your student for taking on this challenging curriculum and engaging with a variety of subjects. Encourage them when they face challenges, and celebrate each learning opportunity. You have provided your student with a one-of-a-kind education. It is the gift that will keep giving! I am so excited to continue to partner with you as we begin the 2022-2023 school year. Taking the time to reflect on why we all chose D'Evelyn and what D'Evelyn promises our students will steer us in the right direction for an excellent school year!
