By:  Jenna Spendlove, DEF Executive Director

The D’Evelyn Education Foundation (DEF) currently distributes more than $24,500 in scholarships to deserving D’Evelyn Seniors at the annual Senior Awards Banquet each Spring.  The DEF Board and Scholarship Committee are excited to announce our new  Digital Scholarship Application process  which is “LIVE” as of December 1, 2022.

Each student must submit the completed DEF Digital Scholarship Application along with the required documentation for each application located within the digital application.  Students will need access to their ACT and/or SAT scores, common-app essay, transcripts, letters of recommendation, list of personal experiences, honors, awards, activities, and a completed coach or teacher ranking form for applicable scholarships. If a student has easy access to these items, the application process should be quick and easy!  We hope students will peruse the various scholarships and apply for all they qualify for!

All completed online applications and required documents are due in the Counseling Office on February 28, 2023, at 11:59 pm. NO EXCEPTIONS!  This includes all supporting materials such as letters of recommendation, ranking forms, transcripts, scores, etc.  Please allow teachers, community members, and coaches ample time to complete the requested forms and letters for your scholarship to be completed by the deadline.

The DEF Scholarship Committee is happy to help you with any questions you may have along the way, please don’t hesitate to contact us directly at: [email protected]

Scholars of the Month
Picture
By:  Eric McCaslin-Hahn, Assistant Principal, Athletics and Activities Director

Congratulations to the Scholar of the Month winners for the month of November. They were chosen by the Science Department.

Tyler Feighny, 6th Grade

“Tyler takes a true interest in Earth Science.  He asks thoughtful questions and goes out of his way to help his peers understand.  Way to go Tyler!.”

-Ms. Ericson: Science Teacher

Picture
Chloe Menzer, 8th Grade

“Chloe Menzer is a wonderful participant in Physical Science! She volunteers to contribute to class discussions and clearly explains science concepts to classmates. She demonstrates great lab techniques, and she is a fun lab partner. She is kind to her peers and welcomes them into new friendships. Chloe, thank you for choosing D’Evelyn!

-Ms. Aguiar: Science Teacher

Eliza Schurter, 11th Grade

“Eliza is doing a phenomenal job in chemistry this year! She comes to class each day ready to learn, and when things are difficult, she comes in to get help and ask questions. In group work and class activities Eliza is constantly working to deeply understand the material, and she asks great questions in class that help her colleagues to better understand things as well. It is not always easy, but her effort is really paying off and she is truly succeeding in chemistry!

-Ms. McGee: Science Teacher
Picture
Paul Dawson, 9th Grade

“Paul enters the classroom with a positive attitude, prepared to conquer any content put before him; I don’t think that Paul has ever come to class not prepared for the day’s lesson or lab. Paul consistently answers questions posed in class, sometimes going “out on a limb” and not knowing he has the correct answer, which keeps the ideas flowing in the discussion. Paul genuinely wants to learn and works hard to figure things out on his own, but is proactive in asking for clarification if he does not understand a concept. All of Paul’s academic strengths combined with his sense of humor and overall “good guy” demeanor make him a great student to have in the classroom!”

-Mr. Ray: Science Teacher

Heart of D'Evelyn Winners
Picture
By:  Eric McCaslin-Hahn, Assistant Principal, Athletics and Activities Director

Congratulations to the Heart of D’Evelyn winners for the month of November. The Heart of D’Evelyn Award is intended to recognize students who exemplify the core values that we find in D’Evelyn’s Founding Document. These core values are Responsibility, Honesty, Self-Control, Kindness, and Fairness. These winners were chosen by their teachers based on their actions and behaviors in class, the lunchroom, and the hallways.

Tonya Singleton, 7th Grade

“Tonya embodies the "Heart of D'Evelyn" spirit with her kind, gracious, humble nature. Tonya speaks sweetly to other students and demonstrates role-model behavior in class. She is a faithful student reading, annotating, writing, and studying to the best of her ability. I am so grateful to have Tonya as a student-- she inspires me to be a better person!”

-Ms. Ford, English Teacher

Picture
Cadlyn Hart, 9th Grade

“Cadlyn is an exemplary student. Her focus and determination in class are surpassed only by her positivity and kindness. She strives to persevere when facing tricky new material but always has the patience and enthusiasm to collaborate effectively with teammates and lend a hand to struggling classmates. Her cheeriness every day makes my day ... 1st period Latin II is lucky to have her!”

-Ms. Bowman, Latin Teacher

Activities Members of the Month
Picture
By:  Eric McCaslin-Hahn, Assistant Principal, Athletics and Activities Director

Congratulations to the Activities Member of the Month winners for the month of November. These winners were chosen by their Activities Sponsors based on their leadership qualities, work ethic, and other traits that represent what D’Evelyn wants to see in all of their Activities Members. They were chosen out of all the Activities Members that participate in outside of school events.

Bethany Cook, 12th Grade

“I would nominate Bethany Cook for NHS Activities Member of the Month. Bethany has been in NHS for both her junior and senior year and is currently serving as the NHS secretary. I appreciate that Bethany is always willing to step in and help when one of her fellow officers can't attend and she always volunteers for our events with a smile on her face. She is a great addition to the leadership team and I appreciate her hard work.”

-Mrs. Bender, Spanish Teacher and NHS Sponsor

Picture
Reilly Harrington, 11th Grade

“This is Reilly's second year on the Forensics Team.  She has done both Speech and Debate successfully.  Last year, she went to the State Tournament in Congressional Debate. This year she has begun competing in Informative Speaking, earning a ribbon at the Eaglecrest Tournament with her speech about the Matilda Effect where men ignore the contributions of women to the STEM fields.  She also used her speaking skills to work with a graduate student to create a program emphasizing positive attitudes toward taking care of mental health issues for high school students.”

 -Ms. Peters, Forensics Coach

Athletes of the Month
Picture
By:  Eric McCaslin-Hahn, Assistant Principal, Athletics and Activities Director

Congratulations to the Athlete of the Month winners for the month of November. These winners were chosen by their coaches based on their leadership qualities, work ethic, and other traits that represent what D’Evelyn wants to see in all of their Student-Athletes. They were chosen out of all the Student-Athletes at D’Evelyn.

Clayton Gustafson, 11th Grade

“Clayton had an incredible year for his team and program. He was a first-year varsity player that made his way into the starting lineup in a completely different position than what he normally had played in his prior years at D'Evelyn. When told of the change in the position he grasped it with both hands and ran with it and learned all of the specifics and tactics that were associated with it. Clayton continually faced adversity all season long with an open mind and willingness to succeed which saw him switch again to a central role in the defense and the leadership of our backline. The adversity showed up when Clayton fractured his leg partway through our season but he still showed up to training and games every day to help lead and coach his backline teammates and be there to help answer questions. His approach in terms of leadership with his peers was always the highest quality and exceptional honesty. Clayton's most enduring trait is his desire to always be at his best whether it’s on or off the field in everything he does. He’s for sure a shining example of what a successful student-athlete at D’Evelyn should look and sound like. Congrats Clayton on an incredible season!”

-Coach Moline, Head Boys Soccer Coach

Picture
Sambo Heng, 11th Grade

“Sambo has really turned things around.  His focus in the classroom is light years ahead of where it was in the past.  Despite missing the first 3 games with a broken wrist, Sambo was at every practice during his injury and even helped us as an assistant coach during that time.  Once Sambo was able to get back on the field he became a ball of dynamite play in and play out.  Sambo is starting to become an all-around student-athlete and continues to become an even better person.”

-Coach Rankin, Head Football Coach

Teacher of the Month
By:  Eric McCaslin-Hahn, Assistant Principal, Athletics and Activities Director
Picture
Please join us in congratulating the November Teacher of the Month, Ghis Sabre. Ghis is an outstanding member of our community and is dedicated to the school. He was nominated by students, staff, and parents. Ghis is in his 10th year teaching at D’Evelyn and in his 17th year overall as a French Teacher. Below is what people nominating him said:

  • Ghis is a GEM! He is out in the upstairs hallway almost every single class period. He always has a bubbly attitude, and you never know...he might even be carrying a lightsaber! The kids love taking French with him, and it's apparent how well-loved he is by all. He brings so much sunshine to the upper east hallway! :)
  • Mr. Sabre has been so nice to me and really helped me in my first year at D'Evelyn! He is so funny and makes everyone laugh every day.
  • Mr. Sabre is such a good teacher and he is always making me smile! He has made me feel really welcome at D'Evelyn(it's my first year) and he is always happy and bright!

Congratulations Ghis! Thank you for being such a valuable member of our community!

Robotics Team News
By: Chris Vollmer, Computer Science Instructor & Robotics Sponsor

On Saturday, November 12th, the D'Evelyn Robotics Team competed in the BEST Robotics competition held at Englewood High School. The team, consisting of Luke Battagline, Lilly Battagline, Audrey Hagan, P.J. Vu, Grayson Neptune, and Glenn Spofford, was awarded a trophy and medals for their third-place finish.  BEST which stands for Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology is a national organization that sponsors regional robotics competitions. All teams are provided with the materials needed to build a robot. They are given eight weeks to design, build, program, and test the robot. During the competition, teams earn points by controlling the robot to perform specific tasks.

This year's team battled through some initial challenges during the first round. The drivers and robot performed splendidly and proved to be stiff competition for bigger schools that spend much time working on their robots during the school day. Congratulations to the 2022 D'Evelyn Robotics team.

Principally Speaking
By:  Dr. Rob Bishop, Principal

On this final message prior to our upcoming Thanksgiving week break and on the heels of the D’Evelyn Education Foundation Dinner/Auction fundraiser, I feel it appropriate to provide some thoughts of thankfulness.

First, I am very thankful for the opportunity to serve as D’Evelyn’s principal this school year. I have enjoyed every aspect of leading a school that embodies an educational philosophy that aligns with much of my own views of what school should be for our students. I deeply appreciate the great effort put forth by students, the dedication of our faculty and staff, and the support from D’Evelyn parents and families.

Second, I am thankful for the partnerships with the many parent-led groups and committees that are critical to how we operate and our success at D’Evelyn. This especially includes the D’Evelyn Education Foundation. The Annual Dinner Auction on Friday, November 11th was a great example of the support and enthusiasm I feel from our collective community of parents and the many parent-led support groups and committees. The enthusiasm and shared belief in the quality of the D’Evelyn education was on full display throughout the evening.

I will leave the details of the generosity of our D’Evelyn community and business/corporate partners as a result of this event to be reported by the DEF leadership. However, I must recognize that the passion, commitment, and support for D’Evelyn from our parents, family members, faculty, and staff is overwhelming. I would be remiss if I didn’t say thank you to the DEF Board, and especially to Jenna Spendlove for her leadership and the help of many others for their time and commitment to make the evening a success. The community support we enjoy at D’Evelyn is one of many key elements that help create and foster what D’Evelyn is . . . A Great School!

I hope you and your family enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving and the associated Thanksgiving Break. I look forward to an excellent finish to the first semester upon our return on November 28.

Enrollment for the 2023-2024 School Year
By:  Greg Kottcamp, Assistant Principal

It is hard to believe that we are already quickly approaching our open enrollment period for the 2023-2024 school year.  At D’Evelyn, along with all Jeffco Schools, we rely on the Enroll Jeffco platform to manage our enrollment process.  We encourage all families in Jeffco to review and consider the information available at Enroll Jeffco.

The open enrollment period is crucial to D’Evelyn as an option school in Jefferson County.  100% of D’Evelyn students are admitted to the school via the lottery system in Enroll Jeffco.  We enroll students in 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th grades each year.  We always appreciate current D’Evelyn families sharing information regarding our enrollment processes and timelines with friends, family, and fellow community members.

School choice is a crucial decision for students and families.  As a liberal arts school with a unique curriculum and educational philosophy, D’Evelyn is not the best fit for all students.  However, we have great confidence in our program's strength and its great impact on our student's lives.  Please join us in encouraging interested families to participate in our upcoming Open House and Prospective Student Information Nights.

The Open House for interested students and families will occur on Thursday, December 1st from 5 - 7 PM.  The last tour will begin at 6:15 PM.  This will be an excellent opportunity for interested students and families to meet D’Evelyn students, teachers, staff, and club sponsors, and in the process, learn more about our great school.

Additionally, we offer four Prospective Student Information Nights.  All new families must attend one Information Night before enrolling their student at D’Evelyn.  This year, we will host Information Nights in the auditorium on the following dates:
  • December 1 - Open House 5 - 7 pm, Information Night Presentation 7 pm
  • December 5 - For Dennison Families, Information Night Presentation 7 pm
  • December 15 - Information Night Presentation 7 pm
  • January 11 - Information Night Presentation 7 pm

Upcoming Enrollment Dates for the 2023-24 School Year
  • Round 1 Enrollment for the 2023-24 school year will open on December 6, 2022, and closes on January 13, 2023
  • Round 1 Lottery Offers will be sent to families around January 24, 2023
  • Round 2 Enrollment for the 2023-24 school year opens January 29, 2023, and will close August 31, 2023

  • Friday, November 11, 2022
  • 6pm Reception & Silent Auction
  • 8pm Live Auction
  • Baldoria on the Water

We are just days away from the 2022 D’Evelyn Dinner Auction.  I am excited to invite you and your family to attend this wonderful event.  Families can still purchase tickets, register for the auction (Unable to attend?  You can still bid online!), and make a monetary donation on our event website.

Join your friends and mingle with D’Evelyn staff while enjoying a delicious fall-themed dinner, dessert bar, and drink.  Put in a bid for some of the amazing auction items like a D’Evelyn letter jacket and other D’Evelyn swag, reserved East Lot parent parking, and Denver Burger Battle tickets.  Have fun at an ‘Auction Party’ like a pizza party with Band Director Dr. Craig Theis or a hot chocolate tailgater.  The live auction is equally as impressive with a Pro Traeger Grill, Nuggets basketball club tickets with autographed basketball, and a ski area condo with four ski passes.  And get a jump on your holiday shopping with one of our many themed gift baskets.

We have many great programs to support, so we really need you to come and enjoy this great event!

The D’Evelyn Education Foundation (DEF) was established in 2004 as a non-profit organization designed to provide the financial support necessary to maintain the academic, athletic, performing arts, and scholarship programs at D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School.  The financial support of DEF is essential to the continued success of our great school and serves the important function of supporting D’Evelyn students, teachers, and staff both inside and outside the classroom.

Among the various programs DEF supports, this year, the fundraising efforts will support:
  • Over $25,000 towards D’Evelyn performing arts (music, choir, and theater)
  • Over $25,000 towards D’Evelyn Jags athletic programs
  • Over $10,000 for programs supporting D’Evelyn students, including Boys and Girls Mentoring, After Prom, and Junior High Boosters
  • Over $32,000 in scholarships and awards offered to D’Evelyn students and faculty again this year, supporting students with college scholarships and teachers with support for continuing education
  • Support for numerous other DEF community engagement programs, like Jaguar Tracks, teacher recognitions, DEF events, and Parent-Teacher Conferences

DEF fundraises through a variety of methods and events each year, including the D’Evelyn Dash, the Auction, the Annual Giving Campaign, and the Annual Golf Tournament.  In order to provide this ample support to D’Evelyn students and teachers, we ask D’Evelyn families to consider opportunities that they can support including attending and participating in the Auction.  If you have questions or ideas on how you can get involved, please contact Jenna Spendlove, Executive Director and Auction Chair, at [email protected].

D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School is a special school.  The commitment of our students, faculty, and staff is integral to the success of our rigorous liberal arts program outlined in the D’Evelyn Founding Document.  The support of D’Evelyn parents, families, and alumni allows for our academic and extracurricular community to continue to be special.  I am touched by the steady and consistent support we receive in so many different ways from D’Evelyn families.  It is my sincere hope that you will be able to join in this important community fundraising event on November 11th.

Veterans Day Assembly
By:  Dan Wille, Assistant Principal
Picture
As Veterans Day approaches, it is important to take time to acknowledge the meaning of this national holiday.  D’Evelyn strives to prepare students for roles as active, informed citizens who celebrate the strengths of our nation.  To celebrate our patriotism we emphasize the unique values, freedoms, and liberties essential to the United States and can think of no better group of heroes who represent the importance of these lofty ideals than the men and women who have unselfishly served our nation.  Our veterans and active duty service members sacrifice tremendously giving up their safety, comforts of home, friends, and family, and at times their lives to model true service, heroism, and honor.  By their selfless service, they show us that the democratic ideals upon which our country was founded and the freedom which the United States personifies are worth fighting to protect.  We find it imperative that we thank these men and women for their self-sacrifice and service to our country.  Thus, we are excited to celebrate our veterans and their families at D’Evelyn’s Veterans Day Tribute Event on November 11th.  Please see the below information for more details:

  • When: November 11th at 1:50pm
  • Where: D’Evelyn Jr./Sr. High School Main Gym, 10359 W. Nassau Ave, Denver, CO 80235
  • Who: All D’Evelyn community veterans and their families
  • What: Assistant Principal Wille will open with remarks regarding the appreciation our school has for our veteran heroes along with a patriotic performance by the D’Evelyn Concert Choir.

We invite all veterans and active service members to join us at 1:20 pm in the cafeteria for snacks and refreshments before the tribute.

Speech and Debate Opportunities
Picture
By:  Coach Tammie Peters

Now that fall sports and activities are winding down, the Forensics team would like you to consider speech and debate.

For junior high school students, we have Debate Club which meets every Thursday after school from 2:35-3:30 in Library Room C.  We'll be learning about "debate thinking" and looking ahead to competing in a few middle school tournaments in the future.

For high school students, we have the Speech and Debate team which meets every Tuesday after school from 2:35-3:15 in Library Room C, plus time for practicing in the students' events.  We have competition opportunities nearly every weekend from November through February.  Which tournaments a student competes in is determined by the student -- no one competes in every tournament.  Students may choose to compete in a number of different types of speaking.

Join some of the famous people who competed in junior high and high school Speech and Debate:  Zac Efron, Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad, Idina Menzel, Jane Pauley, Oprah Winfrey, Keenan Thompson, Kal Penn, Honorable Sonia Sotomayor, Honorable Ketanji Brown Jackson, Jared Padalecki, and more.

Participation in Speech and Debate has also been shown to provide young people with the communication skills needed in most professions, increase standardized test scores, develop leadership skills, evaluate information, and increase critical thinking.

For more information, please contact coach Tammie Peters at [email protected]
