Congratulations to the Heart of D’Evelyn winners for October. The Heart of D’Evelyn Award is intended to recognize students who exemplify the core values in D’Evelyn’s Founding Document. These core values are Responsibility, Honesty, Self-Control, Kindness, and Fairness. Their teachers chose these winners based on their actions and behaviors in class, the lunchroom, and the hallways.
Clayton Gustafson, 11th Grade
“Clayton comes to class every day with a positive attitude. He is engaged with his teachers and friendly to his peers. His sense of humor brings a bright light to the classroom.” -Ms.Sprague, English Teacher
Sophia Munnell, 8th Grade
“Sophia is new to D'Evelyn 8th grader who is an outstanding role model for her peers. She is honest, responsible, kind, and caring. She is eager to do well and asks great questions in order to improve her work and deepen her understanding of what we are reading and learning. I am so grateful that she chose our school and think she is such a fabulous addition to the 8th-grade class.” -Ms. Sweney, English Teacher

Congratulations to the Activities Member of the Month winners for the month of April. These winners were chosen by their Activities Sponsors based on their leadership qualities, work ethic, and other traits that represent what D’Evelyn wants to see in all of their Activities Members. They were chosen out of all the Activities Members that participate in outside-of-school events.
Aimee Kennedy, 11th Grade
“Aimee has always been a strong musician and asset to the D'Evelyn Music Program, but she deserves special recognition for all she has taken on since the beginning of this school year. Aimee passed her audition and was accepted into the Jeffco Honor Choir. She auditioned for All-State Choir which is quite a grueling and stressful process (we are still waiting on the results) where she performed her solo with beauty and expressivity. Aimee also jumped in to conduct the Concert Choir in our National Anthem at a pep rally when I was absent. She also had a duet with Emerson Smith at our concert during our Combined Choir's performance of "Famine Song" which was beautifully done. In addition to these, Aimee remains a quiet, hard worker who always leads by example in punctuality, rehearsal etiquette, and effort. Congratulations, Aimee! This is well deserved.” -Mr. White, Vocal Music Teacher
Rayna Hylden, 12th Grade
“For the Activities Member of the Month for October, the Marching Band nominates Rayna Hylden! Rayna is the Drum Major for the State Qualifying Marching Band this season. Through her leadership, we have been able to continue the tradition of excellence that the D’Evelyn Marching Band is known for. Thank you Rayna for your energy and enthusiasm through this fall season!” -Dr. Theis, Marching Band Director

Congratulations to the Athlete of the Month winners for the month of October. These winners were chosen by their coaches based on their leadership qualities, work ethic, and other traits that represent what D’Evelyn wants to see in all of their Student-Athletes. They were chosen out of all the Student-Athletes at D’Evelyn. Doubles Team: Sean Perkes and Vince Cushnie, 12th Grade “Sean and Vince were the #1 Doubles Team for D’Evelyn this past fall and were the only seniors on our team. They were the leaders of our team on and off the court. Their leadership was a big reason for our success as a team throughout a difficult schedule. Every match they went against the other school’s top team and they did extremely well. We can’t thank Sean and Vince enough for their hard work this season”.
Peyton Marvel, 11th Grade
“Peyton Marvel is a Junior and plays shortstop for the lady jags softball team. She had another incredible year. She led in almost all offensive categories both for the team and league. Peyton had 49 hits, scored 49 times, 38 stolen bases, and had an amazing .605 batting average. In 95 total at-bats for the season, she only struck out 1 time. She not only is an offensive star, but her defense is spectacular saving multiple games with unbelievable catches. Peyton is a quiet leader that shows by example encouraging all of her teammates to be their best. We are so proud of her not only for her Softball play but her team spirit and leadership. Congrats Peyton!” -Coach Porreco, Head Softball Coach

A short work week and a long weekend have left me with little time to ponder my thoughts for Principally Thinking this week. So allow me to briefly share with you some great things happening with several D’Evelyn Alumni. Recently, we were honored to host D’Evelyn graduate Matt Dominick, who is currently assigned to NASA as an astronaut scheduled to return to the moon in the near future. See the links below for more about Matt and his visit to D’Evelyn. Additionally, a very nice story was published this past July on the University of Colorado Aerospace Engineering Sciences website. The story features three D’Evelyn graduates and brothers; Phil, Alex, and Dom Miceli. I am sure you will enjoy reading the story linked here. It’s always a pleasure to hear about our past graduates' success, the great things they are doing, and the impact they have on our world. GO JAGS!
D’Evelyn’s Student Voice is hosting a Halloween Spirit week this week.
A reminder to all families that D'Evelyn will have a 2-hour delayed start this Thursday, October 27. This late start along with the other late starts scheduled on February 2nd and May 4th are part of the negotiated agreement between Jeffco Schools and the Jefferson County Education Association (JCEA). On these days, the 2-hour delay bell schedule will be followed and the school store will be closed.

By: Ariahn Knoedler, Steering Committee Parent-Vice Chair
My name is Ariahn Knoedler and I am the newest parent member of the D’Evelyn Steering Committee. I am writing to ask you to consider serving on the Steering Committee as we will have two parent vacancies for the next term starting the 2023-2024 school year. I volunteered at Dennison for years, and since my kids started attending D’Evelyn in 2018, I started volunteering by helping out with various social activities. I then started participating in accountability meetings, helped with several textbook and curricular committees, and observed steering meetings for several years. There are many wonderful ways to help serve at our school and I determined that the Steering Committee is a big reason why our school has maintained such impressive standards of excellence throughout its existence. I completed the required reading several years ago but decided with all four of my girls at D’Evelyn, this year I would pitch and serve on Steering. So far, it has been great - it is a time commitment of four or five hours a month but I am enjoying meeting teachers, and learning about the behind-the-scenes at our great school. If you are thinking about running for one of the parent spots, the first step would be to read our founding document. Then, if you even have the smallest interest in serving on the Steering Committee next year, please plan to attend our Steering Committee training on Tuesday, November 8 at 6:30 pm (following the accountability meeting- this meeting satisfies one of the required pieces of the application process). In the meantime, you are also welcome to reach out to me personally and I am happy to answer any questions you may have! (303-641-6166 or [email protected])

Congratulations to the Scholar of the Month winners for the month of October. They were chosen by the Math Department.
Cole Schenk - 6th grade
“Cole sets a great example for other students to follow. He is consistently on time and prepared for his classes. HIs work is done with neatness and detail and he follows all expectations set forth. I appreciate his laser focus and his positive attitude.” -Mr. Davis: Math Teacher
Charlotte Kung, 6th grade
“Charlotte is an outstanding math student who is diligent and meticulous in her work. Her quiet focus and sense of humor are great additions to our classroom environment.” -Mr. Davis: Math Teacher
Sofia Cieslewicz, 11th grade
“The math department is proud to recognize Sofia Cieslewicz for excellence in honors pre-calculus. Intuitive and curious, Sofia craves intellectual challenge and consistently shows her interest in understanding concepts more than simply mimicking process. Sofia is tantalized by learning and committed to mastering the most difficult concepts. I often joke that when she writes her name on a test, she should write “The Key” Cieslewicz since her answers are likely 100% correct. Congratulations Sofia!” -Ms. Cannon: Math Teacher
Kieran Burton, 9th grade
“Kieran’s enthusiasm and joy brings liveliness to our first-period algebra 2 class. He has achieved at a high level this year and his propensity to seek knowledge will continue to see him reach new heights. The month of October always shows those signs of the change of seasons and is much so within the school setting at D’Evelyn. It has been a busy few weeks at D’Evelyn for students, families, faculty, and staff. Students and teachers are working hard each day in the classroom, D’Evelyn fall athletes are competing in their league schedules and state postseason competitions, and D’Evelyn performing artists have been entertaining and competing regularly. It is an exciting time at D’Evelyn - I am proud of the many achievements already met this year by our wonderful students, faculty, and staff. A shout out to our golfers, Taj Kumar and Graham Truesdel who competed in the first state championship event of the fall season. Both of these student-athletes represented D’Evelyn well as fierce competitors. We look forward to the completion of all other Fall sports team seasons and wish all student-athletes the best of luck in postseason regional and state competitions. Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of listening to our Senior High Choirs and the performances were terrific. I also heard the performances by the Junior High choir students and the Instrumental music students were outstanding. Thank you to Mr. White and Dr. Theis and all choir and instrumental music students for presenting such wonderful sounds. Also on the performing arts front, I congratulate the Marching Band for the progress they have made thus far this season and for bringing home first-place honors for the 3A school division at the Douglas County Marching Invitational. Marching Band is in the final couple of weeks of preparation and push to regional and state competitions. We are upon the midpoint of the first semester, and I know that D’Evelyn students have been busy, and at times stressed and overwhelmed. I encourage our students to preserve and find success, and I call upon us all to support and cheer them on as they encounter the challenges of mid-semester exams, projects, and papers. I expect that the remaining eight weeks of this semester will be as equally challenging, busy, and exhaustive as the first eight weeks. As we proceed through the remainder of the semester, I ask parents and families to continue to provide support and encouragement for their students. There will be difficult days, and even weeks, in the course of the semester. However, if we all work towards supporting and encouraging our students, I know that our shared sense of the empowering, uplifting nature of the D’Evelyn liberal arts program will guide us through those struggles. At the end of this week, students and families will have the gift of a four-day mini-fall break. I hope this time will be restful, relaxing, and restorative for all. I offer my very best wishes to a successful second half of the semester for all D’Evelyn students - in classes, athletics, performances, and other extracurricular endeavors.

In 1991, groups throughout Colorado were working to develop schools they felt would better educate their children. But school boards always said “no.” Charter legislation, introduced in 1992, was an attempt to free parents and teachers from the power of a local school board to reject ideas other than their own and allowing an appeal to the State Board of Education. The bill was killed. But, great ideas don’t die. And people who truly believe in ideas don’t allow them to die. Dave D’Evelyn, the father of charter schools in Colorado, continued to work at drafting legislation that could be passed. He and the Colorado Children’s Campaign organized a Charter conference in December of 1992 for an expected 70 attendees. 140 attended. Governor Romer endorsed the concept of Charter Schools in his 1993 State of the State address, followed immediately with unanimous endorsement from the State Board of Education. We spent hours at the legislature testifying and observing. It was big, with 18 hours of hearings in the Senate Education Committee alone. Finally, in May 1993, the legislature passed the bipartisan Charter School Bill. Governor Romer signed the bill into law. Sadly, that May, we lost Dave D’Evelyn in a small-plane crash while returning from Durango where he helped charter proposers understand the law. All who worked with Dave knew him to be principled, visionary, and compassionate, He taught well, wrote well, and lived well. His depth of insight, willingness to confront the hard questions in education, defense of individual liberty, and clear adherence to academic excellence were outstanding. He trusted individual parents to make the best choices for their own children. Parents at Dennison K-8 had long wondered why there was no high school to continue the educational philosophy delivered by Dennison. They were always told, “for your grandchildren perhaps.” With Charter possible, a small group of us met in August 1993, to draft the Philosophy Statement for a high school. Philosophy Statement in hand, we began having public meetings to confirm that the school we envisioned had a clientele - demonstrated by letters of intent. Simultaneously, we researched financial, building, curriculum, transportation, contract, and other necessary issues. We also met with the Jeffco District officials and the media. In December we submitted the final Options proposal to the District, and in January the final Charter version. When the Jeffco Board heard the proposal we had 900 letters of intent and hundreds of parents attending Board meetings. In March the school was approved as an option and denied as a Charter. We were promised the Manning building and required to write an initial (April) Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). We then reviewed the Document with a Jeffco administrator while considering appealing the Charter denial. The June 1993, MOU clarified our relationship with the district, guaranteeing significant operational autonomy. We also named the option school for Dave D’Evelyn. In May we began enrolling students, hiring teachers, choosing and ordering books, and doing all the necessary things to open D’Evelyn. In August 1994 we opened with our first 7th, 8th, and 9th-grade students. It was no small victory. It is now our collective mission to keep the program worthy of the name it bears.
Cross Country
The Cross Country Teams had outstanding performances at the Jeffco League Championships on Oct 13. Thank you to Coach Lisa Bell and Coach Erik Bell for putting together the course and running the meet. It was exciting seeing all 20 Jeffco schools competing on our campus yesterday afternoon. They have improved to 12-4 on the season and 6-1 in conference play. They are back in action Oct 18 when they travel to Alameda International. Marching Band The Marching Band had their full show that they performed at Trailblazer Stadium on Oct 13. It was impressive seeing the improvements they have made since the Big Cat Invite. They participate in the Regional Tournament on Oct 18, and that will determine if they qualify for the State Championships. The State Championships will be in Grand Junction on Monday, Oct 31. Football The Football Team defeated Wellington High School with a 34-12 victory on Oct 13 at Trailblazer. The team has improved to 5-2 on the season and they are 3-0 in conference play. They travel to Prospect Ridge Academy on Oct 22. If they win the next two games, they will win the conference championship and earn a State playoff berth. Good luck boys!

This Thursday, October 13th, D’Evelyn will not have 7th hour. Students will be released from school at the end of 6th hour, which is at 1:40 pm. Parents may pick their students up at this time, instead of our normal 2:30 pm release. That afternoon, D’Evelyn will be hosting the Jefferson County High School League Cross Country Meet. The 18 Jeffco League 4A and 5A schools will all be in attendance for the 8 races that afternoon. The first race will start at 3:00 pm and the last race will begin around 6:00 pm. Please contact Mr. McCaslin-Hahn if you have any questions.

D’Evelyn would like to thank D’Evelyn Graduate and NASA Astronaut Matthew Dominick for his kindness and generosity on Friday! He took time out of his busy schedule to come back to his home school and inspire the next generation of Jaguars. His humble and gracious attitude toward every student and adult he met throughout the day was inspiring. He excitedly embraced his former teachers and enjoyed reconnecting with them for the first time in years. His motivational speech during the 7th-hour Pep Rally inspired the D’Evelyn students to embrace that D’Evelyn is worth the academic struggle and will pay off with tons of possibilities for careers after graduation. He then excitedly joined in the tug-of-war game of Staff vs. Seniors. Thanks to Astronaut power, the Staff prevailed over the Seniors! Then after school, he had lunch with our club The Society of Women Engineers and had a talk with them about what he is doing at NASA and his journey after graduating from D’Evelyn. He met with them for an hour and a half, answering every question they had. Then he joined the larger D’Evelyn and Dennison Community in the Auditorium for his NASA presentation. He spent 45 minutes taking us through his journey as a NASA Astronaut, all the details about what exciting things are going on right now, and what our plans are in the future. He then again graciously took questions for over 30 minutes from everyone in the audience. Then he moved to the Main Gym where he met with every audience member, signed a picture for them with a personal message, and posed for pictures with anyone who wanted them. His endurance and attitude of giving back throughout the entire day was inspiring! Thank you to D’Evelyn parent Jack Dyson for organizing this homecoming! Without Mr. Dyson’s help, Astronaut Dominick would not have been able to make it back to D’Evelyn. Thank you to Senior Catalina Dyson for organizing the Society of Women Engineers lunch and meet and greet. This was a great small setting for our students to get to hear more about the possibilities they have in their future. Thank you to Assistant Principal Dan Wille for setting up the structure of the visit! Mr. Wille planned a few years ago to bring Astronaut Dominick home, but it, unfortunately, fell through at the last minute. We were grateful for the foundation of the visit already set up, which allowed the events on Friday to run smoothly. And thank you to Matthew Dominick for being such a wonderful inspiration to our entire community. He is one of only 40 Astronauts in the United States, but his humble personality and gracious attitude gave our students a role model to follow. Friday was another reminder of why D’Evelyn is such a wonderful community. Thank you all for everything that you do to make D’Evelyn the best school in the state! The picture below best represents D’Evelyn. During the SWE meet and greet, one of our Seniors asked Matthew to sign her D’Evelyn calculator! Go Jags!

The D'Evelyn Administration is seeking interest in parent volunteers staffing the front entrance security check-in window. In the past, the window has been staffed 7:30 am - 3:30 pm by one of our two Campus Supervisors. However, we do not foresee Jeffco Security in the position to staff D'Evelyn with a second Campus Supervisor anytime soon. If you are interested in volunteering your time and learning more about the time and training commitment, you are invited to complete the interest survey linked here.

Congratulations to the Athlete of the Month winners for the month of September. These winners were chosen by their coaches based on their leadership qualities, work ethic, and other traits that represent what D’Evelyn wants to see in all of their Student-Athletes. They were chosen out of all the Student-Athletes at D’Evelyn.
Jett Cowee: 11th Grade
“The September Athlete of the month is Jett Cowee. As an upperclassman, Jett knew that he would be counted on to provide leadership to the team this season. He worked hard during the summer and came into the season ready to go. He leads by example as his hard work has helped him become the team leader in each of our meets throughout the first half of the season. A true D’Evelyn student-athlete, Jett is a member of Student Council and currently carries a 4.0 GPA. Congratulations Jett!” -Coach Bell, Head Cross Country Coach
Jayden Miller: 12th Grade
“A student-athlete is someone who is incredibly hard-working, self-motivated, and disciplined; they are poised under stress and resilient while balancing school, athletics, and social demands. This month’s student-athlete for XC is Jayden Miller. She shows her dedication to both academics and athletics with her rigorous academic schedule, including 4 AP classes. Jayden has learned how taking care of yourself and believing in yourself translates to success. She put in an incredible amount of work in the summer to start the season in shape after sustaining multiple injuries. Jayden has led the girl's team as our top runner all season while encouraging her teammates to do their best. Congratulations Jayden!” -Coach Bell, Head Cross Country Coach

What’s on the Calendar?
College Visits College visits are 1:50 - 2:30 pm Monday thru Thursday. Please sign up in NAVIANCE. Remember these college admissions counselors read and decide your admittance into their institutions. Hope to see you there!
Princeton Review The Princeton Review is hosting a virtual "PSAT Week" from October 3 to 6. Discussions include PSAT strategies, National Merit Scholarship Qualification, and how the test fits into your college application process. Go to PrincetonReview.com to register for the following sessions.
Help with College Applications Counselors are here to help! We can provide guidance on when to apply and where, give assistance with the common app, discuss whether to go test-optional, and support students with the essay. Please have students set up an appointment and we can help them work through the college application process and give advice along the way. We encourage students to attend our college visits and meet Admissions Representatives in person. We also have the Common Applications workshops and Scholarship workshops to help support students. Parents, please be cautious about helping students do their applications. There is a fine line between helping and doing the application. Colleges want to hear from students about their essays and the different components of the application. Be aware that they can usually tell when a parent has done all or part of the application or the essay. We know it’s busy and you’re trying to help your student, and we want you to know we can support and encourage them on our end as well. Just have them stop and set up an appointment with us. Essay/Editing Help for Scholarship and College Applications Emily Smith (a recent D'Evelyn graduate) has a freelance editing business, "Wordsmith Services." Emily has experience with the application process for both scholarships and colleges. For a nominal fee of $2 a page (generally) and quick turnaround times, she can help provide you with editing, proofreading, and clear communication. Email Emily at [email protected]. Scholarships
