All proceeds support the Quarter Century, Quarter Million Campaign. By Ralph K. Spencer, D'Evelyn Education Foundation Board of Directors
I know many of you are aware that D'Evelyn Jr./Sr. High School is celebrating a quarter century of educational excellence this school year. The D'Evelyn Education Foundation (DEF) Board of Directors has embraced Principal Josh Griffin's goal of raising quarter million dollars to help celebrate this historic milestone. How can we go about achieving this lofty goal? Believe it or not, I may have at least a partial solution for those community members who would like to play a role in reaching this fundraising goal for our truly incredible school - at NO out-of-pocket costs! The King Soopers Neighborhood Reward Gift Card Program and the Safeway Reloadable Gift Card Program are excellent examples of how every member of the D'Evelyn community can painlessly participate in fundraising for our school. These proceeds are a major source of funds for DEF. We have been receiving between $800 and $1,000 each month from these cards of late but could easily receive much more if we could only get more community members to begin using these cards each time they go to King Soopers or Safeway. Let's do the math: D'Evelyn has about 600 families with children in Jr. and Sr. High School. Assume each family spends an average of $1,000 in food and gasoline each month (most likely a conservative estimate). This means that each family spends $12,000 a year on food and gasoline. Multiply this $12,000 x 600 families = $7,200,000 x 5% = $360,000 going to D'Evelyn each year! A quarter of a million dollars, plus! If only 1/2 of the D'Evelyn community participated, D'Evelyn would receive $180,000 annually. If only 1/4 of the families participated, $90,000 would go to D'Evelyn, or enough to cover the DEF budget for an entire year! How exactly do these programs work? The DEF purchases $2.50 cards from the King Soopers Gift Services Department and the Safeway Gift Card Program and distributes them to any willing D'Evelyn community member at no cost. Each time our D'Evelyn account at King Soopers or Safeway reaches $5,000 in sales (exceptions at King Soopers include sales of money orders, Western Union, lottery tickets, stamps, and other gift cards), D'Evelyn receives a 5% rebate ($5,000 X 5% = $250!). The Safeway card can be used for groceries, postage stamps, fuel and event sales. They cannot be used for money orders, Western Union, lottery tickets, or Reloadable Visa and Master Cards. You may reload your cards with a check, cash, or a credit card at either the Customer Service Desk or the checkout line. Cards may be reloaded for any amount up to $500 and used at the checkout line before the cashier begins ringing up any of your groceries. When buying gas, simply use your card the same way you would use your credit card. A lost card can be replaced with the remaining balance by contacting the school immediately and have them pass your name on to me. Use this same process to obtain a brand-new card. A word of caution: Cards that carry a zero balance for 90 days will become inactive. A new card must be obtained from your D'Evelyn representative (call the school, as noted above). Please consider using this painless fundraising tool to help DEF continue its support of our extraordinary school! After all, I can think of a quarter million reasons why you should do so!!! Learning to play an instrument can have a profound, positive impact on a young person, teaching valuable life skills and boosting confidence and self-esteem. And that unused instrument you have at home in your basement can help make it happen. Our growing instrumental music program has put us in desperate need of band and orchestra instruments for our music department. We will be collecting donations of gently-used band and orchestra instruments that will be repaired for students at our school. The program is particularly in need of Cellos, Double Basses, and Alto Saxophones, but all instruments are welcome. Even if you don't have an instrument, you can help by contributing a monetary donation. $150 is all it takes to repair a donated instrument and put it in the hands of a student. Drop off your instrument or any size donation (payable to DEF) to the band room or main office, or call 303-982-2600 to arrange for it to be picked up.
