Prom Season Next week, April 17-21, D’Evelyn students will have their Prom Spirit Week, which culminates in the Prom on the evening of Saturday, April 22nd, and After Prom festivities in the late night / early morning hours of April 22nd and 23rd. This year, the Prom will be at Glenmoor Country Club, and we wish all D’Evelyn students attending a wonderful evening of fun with their friends. After Prom will be hosted at the Ridge Recreation Center, which will be transformed considerably to suit the needs and interests of D’Evelyn students. Both events are sure to be exceptional. Big thanks to all of the parents, students, faculty, and staff that will make Prom and After Prom so great this year. In this time from here on leading up to Prom and the end of the school year, I ask for your support and consideration in encouraging your students to make safe, appropriate choices. A primary function of our school is to ensure student safety and health. Too often, during the spring Prom season, we hear of those tragic accidents involving teenagers, changing the lives of so many forever. Here at D'Evelyn, we will remind students of all the safe options available to them and the good decisions they can make to ensure a safe and enjoyable Prom celebration. In addition, this time of the school year is also known for students to lose focus on academics with the distraction of the many events and activities leading to the end of the school year. For the senior class, this can be disastrous for some students. But for all students, this could be the difference between ending the school year in an unexpected and undesirable predicament, versus ending on a high note. Please help us by encouraging your student(s) to stay engaged and finish the school year with their best effort. I look forward to seeing many D’Evelyn students and families at the Prom and After Prom events as well as our other end-of-year celebrations and activities. This time annually serves as a highlight of the year, and the beginning of the very busy conclusion to the school year. Junior High Student Social Skills Monitoring During the final week of April, school staff will be conducting a short assessment of student competencies on social-emotional skills. For more information about this assessment, please read the Junior High Student Social Skills Monitoring segment that appears later in this issue of Jag Tracks. The letter provides a thorough explanation of the purpose and process for the assessment. Additionally, the instructions for parents who choose to “opt-out” your student(s) are also included in the letter.

As we get further into the spring season and warmer weather, we would like to remind parents and students about our dress code expectations. When families choose to send their students to D'Evelyn they are expected to follow the school policies. If every family makes sure that their child/ren is/are following the dress code guidelines below, it will help us maintain our high behavior expectations. Please take the time to review the dress code with your kids. The most common violations have been students wearing hats (hoods of their hoodies), shirts exposing the midriff, and shorts that don’t fully extend to cover the mid-thigh. We need your help in making sure that the dress code expectations are met. Thank you for having those hard conversations with your kids.

Parents, we need a few more microwaves for the students to use in the cafeteria during lunch. Last year, some parents contributed microwaves. Unfortunately, two out of the four microwaves stopped working due to wear and tear. If you have a spare working microwave sitting around your house that you are willing to donate to the school, please bring it by the front office.

The D’Evelyn community is and has always been committed to ensuring high levels of learning for all. This includes not only being attentive to academic growth but also recognizing that the social and emotional growth of students is critically important. What we know and research confirms is that there exists a direct connection between student’s emotional well-being and their academic performance. We are dedicated to creating support linked directly to the assessed needs of our students and are excited about the opportunity to systematically screen the social and emotional skills of all our students. We will be using the Social Skills Improvement System™ Social-Emotional Learning Edition Screening/Progress Monitoring Scales (SSIS SEL) to screen 6th through 8th-grade students' social-emotional competencies. The SSIS-SEL Edition Screening/Progress Monitoring Scales is a strength-based tool for screening and progress monitoring social and emotional competence. Teachers are asked to score each student in their class in six areas: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision-making, and motivation to learn. Data collected from the screener and scoring information for individual students will remain at D’Evelyn and all information will be kept confidential. The information acquired through the screener will guide our development of school-wide, small-group, and/or individual interventions. You will be notified if your child is invited to join a small group or individual intervention. If you would like more information or if you have questions at any time, you are welcome to contact Suzanne Roberts, Social Emotional Learning Specialist at 303.982.2632 or[email protected] Should you prefer that your student not be screened at this time, please print Decision to Opt Out, complete it, and return it to the D’Evelyn Counseling Office. No action is required if you are comfortable with this screening and/or are not opting out at this time.
