The counseling department has heard from students over the years that they wish they had more education revolving around real-life scenarios such as finance. So, we created a game, a spinoff from the board game, to introduce students to concepts such as budgeting, paying for rent and utilities, completing a basic balance sheet, and making life decisions based on the income they earn. Every student will be required to attend only ONE of the sessions being held the week of 10/18. Students will be called down based on their last name, and the groups will be of 30 students or less. Please encourage your student to attend these sessions, and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the counseling department. New 8th/9th Grade student meeting Thursday Nov 4th during 7th hour On Nov 4th, all new 8th and 9th grade students will be required to meet with the counseling department. We have met with the new students once a month throughout the first semester, and we are now down to our final two meetings. This week we will continue to have students engage in team bonding activities to get to know one another, and we students will form teams to participate in a game that reviews all the topics we have discussed throughout the semester. This provides students an opportunity to ask questions about what they still do not know or would like more information on, and it gives them a chance to meet new people in a fun environment. Our final session will be in December, and we will discuss the topic of finals, and the best strategies for how to prepare for them. Boys Mentoring Meeting Friday Oct 29th during 7th hour Boy's mentoring has spent the last two sessions focusing on mentor/mentee development through sport. Now that the weather is starting to come in, we are moving the activities indoors. This week we will have the mentor/mentee pairs work together to develop a plan for the construction of an egg capsule. The pairs will work together to develop a plan for an egg capsule which they will construct in the following meeting. This is an activity that the boys love, and it is a great way for the pairs to build a stronger connection with just the two of them. Free College Application Day The Colorado Free Application Day has turned into 3 days! The dates for the free application days are October 19-21. A few years ago, the majority of colleges and universities in the state of Colorado decided to find a day in October to allow all of the students in Colorado to apply to their schools for free. This genius idea has saved families hundreds of dollars on application fees. Application fees have creeped up to $60-$75 per submission, so we highly encourage all of our students who are looking to apply at Colorado institutions to apply on the free days to avoid those fees. Students are not allowed to apply for free outside of this three day window, so it is imperative that students start their Colorado applications as soon as possible. Each institution has different steps students need to take to avoid the application fee upon submission, so please click here to be directed to the instructions for each institution. If the link does not work, you can search Colorado Free Application Day 2021, and it will take you to the appropriate page. If students have questions or need application assistance, please have them contact their counselor. Grade Level Lessons All 10th grade students will participate in the Game of Life, a game developed by the Counseling department to introduce students to the concept of financial literacy. The counseling department has heard from students over the years that they wish they had more education revolving around real-life scenarios such as finance. Please encourage your student to attend these sessions, and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the counseling department. ICAP for Junior high students This month the junior high counselors will be calling 6th - 8th grade students to either the auditorium or the cafeteria to complete ICAP. ICAP stands for individual career academic planning. This is a state initiative that is a multi-year process that guides students in the exploration of career, academic and postsecondary opportunities. Students will be taking various self assessments to gain insight into various careers and they will also have the opportunity to explore their strengths. New 8th/9th Grade student meeting Thursday Oct 14th 7th hour On October 14th, all new 8th and 9th grade students will be required to meet with the counseling department. We meet with the new students once a month for the first semester to help them get acclimated to the school, meet new students to develop relationships, and have them participate in activities that will improve their first year experience. This week we will be focusing on how to get involved at D’Evelyn with all of the different sports, clubs, and organizations throughout the school. Boys Mentoring Meeting Friday Oct 15th, 7th hour Boys Mentoring is up and running! We have had two meetings already, and we are now starting to get into the flow of the school year. Mentors and mentees are starting to develop relationships, and we have seen great bonds start to form in the first two weeks of meetings. We are still allowing new students to join, so if you have a student that you think would be a great mentor, or if you have a student who is struggling with 6th, 7th, or 8th grade, then please contact Mr. Watson or Mr. Northway. We have multiple different activities planned for the rest of the year, and this week we will, weather permitting, look at playing sports and additional activities outside. We are constantly finding activities to keep the boys active and engaging with their mentors and mentee pairs. For future dates, we will have the boys create an egg capsule to protect the egg from breaking when dropped from the second floor and roof of the building. NJHS is meeting Friday October 15th 7th hour - There will be a National Junior Honor Society meeting on October 15th in the cafeteria. Students have been notified of this meeting through google classroom, and it will be in the announcements. Students are to bring their completed Individual Service Project paper with them to the meeting. Don’t forget to get your parents to sign the sheet as well. We look forward to seeing you there and if you have any questions please see Mr. Northway or Ms. Writz in the counseling office. |
