By: Chris Vollmer, Computer Science Instructor & Robotics Sponsor On Saturday, November 12th, the D'Evelyn Robotics Team competed in the BEST Robotics competition held at Englewood High School. The team, consisting of Luke Battagline, Lilly Battagline, Audrey Hagan, P.J. Vu, Grayson Neptune, and Glenn Spofford, was awarded a trophy and medals for their third-place finish. BEST which stands for Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology is a national organization that sponsors regional robotics competitions. All teams are provided with the materials needed to build a robot. They are given eight weeks to design, build, program, and test the robot. During the competition, teams earn points by controlling the robot to perform specific tasks. This year's team battled through some initial challenges during the first round. The drivers and robot performed splendidly and proved to be stiff competition for bigger schools that spend much time working on their robots during the school day. Congratulations to the 2022 D'Evelyn Robotics team. The D'Evelyn Cheerleading team had a strong weekend by winning the 4a/5a division and winning grand champions overall at the Thunder Cheer Championships on Friday, Nov 11. On Saturday, Nov 12 the team placed 3rd at the Mile High Regionals hosted at the Western Stock Show Complex. Congratulations Jags!
Congratulations to the Marching Band for winning the 3A State Championship in Grand Junction! They finished in 1st place in the semi-finals earlier in the day and then finished in 1st place during the Finals again in the evening. They also were awarded 1st place for Best Visual, Best Music, and Best General Effect. Thank you, Dr. Theis, the Marching Band Staff, and all the parent volunteers for all your work in making this happen!

For junior high school students, we have Debate Club which meets every Thursday after school from 2:35-3:30 in Library Room C. We'll be learning about "debate thinking" and looking ahead to competing in a few middle school tournaments in the future. For high school students, we have the Speech and Debate team which meets every Tuesday after school from 2:35-3:15 in Library Room C, plus time for practicing in the students' events. We have competition opportunities nearly every weekend from November through February. Which tournaments a student competes in is determined by the student -- no one competes in every tournament. Students may choose to compete in a number of different types of speaking. Join some of the famous people who competed in junior high and high school Speech and Debate: Zac Efron, Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad, Idina Menzel, Jane Pauley, Oprah Winfrey, Keenan Thompson, Kal Penn, Honorable Sonia Sotomayor, Honorable Ketanji Brown Jackson, Jared Padalecki, and more. Participation in Speech and Debate has also been shown to provide young people with the communication skills needed in most professions, increase standardized test scores, develop leadership skills, evaluate information, and increase critical thinking.
