Our full Varsity Girls Cross Country team (pictured left to right: Katy Haerbig, Kati Livingood, Sonja Morin, Corin Zapico, Lauren Cook, Chloe Stensland, and Taylor Haerbig) and our top Varsity Boy, Lucas Jordan, ran at Nike Cross Country Regionals the weekend before Thanksgiving with great results. The girls came away with 3rd place as a team in the Southwest Region, and Lucas took 4th overall in a very competitive boys race. There were many personal best times, and Lucas, Taylor and Katy moved up or made it onto our program record board with their performances. We are so proud of everyone’s achievements at NXR and during the 2017 season, and can’t wait to see the team continue to improve and succeed into next year and beyond! The Winter Season is up and running for High School Athletics and the Jags compete in 3 Winter Sports, Girls Swimming, Girls Basketball, and Boys Basketball. The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) also offers Skiing, Wrestling, and Ice Hockey as sanctions sports. While we do not offer any of those 3 sports, D’Evelyn High School Students can compete for other Jeffco High Schools that do have the sport. Currently we have 2 DHS Students that compete in Skiing and 2 that compete in Ice Hockey. Let’s check in with our programs here at DHS:
It is a great time of year to get out of the cold, and enjoy the comfort of the warm gym or pool complex to support D’Evelyn High School Athletics! We look forward to seeing you at a game! Go Jags!!! In order to be selected for this prestigious award, athletes must be academically eligible every week and make significant contributions to their teams, in the eyes of their coaches. Emma Kurtz …if you’ve met her, you know what an amazing person she is! If not, you are missing out! Emma is a genuine old soul...so kind, caring, and friendly. As coaches, we are so lucky to have someone like her on our team. Saying we are blessed would be an understatement, seeing that she has blessed so many around her. Emma is a Junior at D’Evelyn. Along with keeping up with school, extracurricular activities, and being a cheerleader, Emma has made time to knit. A few years ago, Emma’s best friend Taylor passed away after a valiant battle with Burkitt Lymphoma. Emma and Taylor were inseparable, even during long visits in the hospital. After his passing Emma decided that every year she would do something in his memory. This year she decided to knit scarfs for the homeless. Her goal was to get a few dozen. But as word got out, family and friends started donating scarfs or yarn to help Emma go above and beyond her goal. The day after Thanksgiving, Emma went downtown and tied 160 scarfs to trees, benches, and light poles. Along with the scarfs was a note explaining Emma’s intentions behind the project: “If you are cold, this belongs to you. This hand knitted scarf does much more than keep you warm. It warms my heart with memories of my amazing friend Taylor. So please, Tie 1 on!” Because of her kindness, Emma was contacted by CBS 4 News and was interviewed to be part of a segment about people in Colorado coming together to help those who need it most. Check it out for yourself on the CBS4 News website. Thank you, Emma, for your dedication to making this city a better place! Let’s all throw kindness around like confetti and be more like Emma this holiday season. Kelly Frye & Lindsey Richie —Varsity Cheer Coaches |
