Parents, we want to make you aware of some ongoing issues we have been experiencing in the school bathrooms. There has been an increase in graffiti, including words, drawings, and carvings on the walls and bathroom stalls. This problem has occurred most frequently in several girls’ bathrooms. The graffiti has been causing a lot of pressure on our custodial staff who have to regularly clean or paint over the walls or stalls. In some cases, we have had to shut down one or two bathrooms due to the frequency of the problem. We are taking this issue seriously, so we are reaching out to you for help. We would greatly appreciate it if you could have a conversation with your children about this issue. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
Congratulations to the Mathcounts team, placing second in sectionals. We also want to extend our warmest congratulations to Hanbei Bao for earning First Place in the individual competition.
We wish the team the best of luck as they head to the state competition in a few weeks!

This week I will continue to speak about the many projects that are ongoing in our effort to plan for next year. Last week we launched the 2023-2024 course selection process for D’Evelyn students currently in grades 6 - 11. This is an important time for our students, staff, and families for multiple reasons. The course selection period from February 6th to February 23rd provides our students the opportunity to request courses for the next school year. As a relatively small school of seven grade levels and a six-class period school day, we have some natural limitations in our scheduling process, such as the limited availability of some advanced elective courses for our students. During the course request process, students are conveying their wishes and intentions for the 2023-2024 school year. The information students submit is a key step for our scheduling team and the development of our school master schedule. It is crucial for our students and families to make informed, thoughtful choices in the course request process, including the selection of alternate elective courses. While we offer a rigorous academic program with nearly 20 Advanced Placement courses, it's important for students and families to strive for balance in the course request process. I encourage students to challenge themselves by requesting advanced courses, but to also consider the workload and other commitments they may have. A balanced approach to course selection will lead to a successful combination of academic, extracurricular, and personal experiences next year. For more information on available courses for the 2023-2024 school year, please refer to the updated Course Planning Guide. This guide includes information on junior high and senior high course requirements, high school graduation requirements, course descriptions, and prerequisites, which are essential for students to plan for next year. Last week, the D'Evelyn counseling team visited students and provided information about the course request process, including options for each grade and details on the process itself. If students have any questions, I encourage them to speak to their counselor before making their final decisions and submitting their course requests. Please remember that the development of the master schedule depends on student course requests, and changes are rare and limited to specific circumstances. I appreciate your support as your student goes through the course selection process. If you have any questions, please reach out to your student's counselor for additional information and support.

Exciting news, my friends ~ this week is Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Week! And Friday, the 17th, is Random Acts of Kindness Day!
This provides us with an opportunity this week to join others who have also decided to make it an intention to be kind to themselves and others. While many of us want to be kind whenever possible, it can also be fun to join in with others working toward a common goal. What we have learned over time about engaging in Random Acts of Kindness is that it greatly benefits both the giver and receiver of kindness, as well as others who may witness the kindness shared! This short video shares this and other health and well-being benefits. If you are interested in learning more about the history of Random Acts of Kindness Day, please check out the KIND Blog. Here you can learn that history and find other interesting posts about kindness. If you need some ideas for RAK Week, check out the RAK Foundation’s Kindness Ideas page. So, join us - think of something you can do for yourself and something you can do for those you know and those you may not know! Share a smile, hold a door, pay a compliment, or share gratitude. Have a fun and mutually beneficial Random Acts of Kindness Week!

The D'Evelyn Mock Trial Team has secured a remarkable 3rd place win at the Regional competition held at the Jefferson County Court House this last Friday and Saturday. Their exceptional performance qualifies them for the State competition, which will be taking place on March 3 and 4th, once again at the Jefferson County Court House. Each year the students receive a case from the Colorado Bar Association, sometimes on high profile cases in the news. Teams are comprised of prosecution and defense with 3 attorneys and 3 witnesses on each side. The competition was the toughest this year with 14 teams competing, litigating the college admissions scandal case. Both DEvelyn teams were in the Top 5 teams through Round 3. After Round 4, D'Evelyn Team A placed 3rd overall out of 14 teams and was the 1st among all public Jeffco schools in District 1. In addition to the team win, several talented students from the team received individual awards for their performances as witnesses and attorneys. Important to note, D'Evelyn overall took the most individual awards of all of the schools competing. Witness awards
Attorney awards
The team that advanced to State is pictured and includes on prosecution, attorneys Tony Adams, Diya Gupta, and Kaylee Kipp, and witnesses Alexandra Holland, Sarah Kreis, and Helen Zhu. On the defense, Team A's attorneys are Mathias Bauer, Emily Yang, and Helen Zhu, and witnesses Tony Adams, Diya Gupta, and Demetra Matzakos. Some attorneys played dual roles. Congratulations to the Team on their fantastic achievement!

Hello, Jaguar families and friends. Wow, the start of the semester and the month of January went incredibly quick and here we are in the month of February. At this point in the school year, the activities and pace of planning for the next school year moves into overdrive. As we plan for next year, a critical component of this is to gather data and information from our stakeholder groups. We do this in several ways and in a variety of venues. Please take this opportunity to provide feedback and input as we plan for next year and with the mindset to keep D’Evelyn a great school. Each year, the D’Evelyn Accountability Committee administers surveys to students, and every other year, D’Evelyn administers the district Make Your Voice Heard Survey. During the upcoming weeks, we will be asking D’Evelyn students and families to complete surveys about their experiences in our school. More information and links to surveys can be found later in the School Surveys article in this newsletter. 9th graders planning to take AP Chem next year must take the pretest being offered on Tues, February 7th, and Wed, February 8th. Students need to sign up the day before the test on the bulletin board outside of W100. Contact Mrs. McGee with any questions.

During the week, students can purchase Wish Week t-shirts for $15, t-shirt and accessory packs for $25, and raffle tickets for $1, both before school and during lunch. Thanks to the dedication of our Student Council members and the support of our sponsors, the raffle has an array of prizes worth over $2,000. Additionally, students can participate in spirit week dress-up days, 7th-hour activities, and daily food night fundraisers. All funds raised during the week will be donated to Make-A-Wish Colorado. A full list of events can be found in the Upcoming Activities and Events section of the newsletter. Here is the latest in our search for a new principal. The district posted job ads across well-respected, higher education websites in December and January, and they successfully attracted nearly a dozen, experienced applicants for our Principal opening. The PHC met mid-month to discuss the pool of applicants and based on the application materials, resumes, educational philosophy statements, transcripts, and letters of recommendation, the Committee narrowed the pool to four, highly qualified candidates. The four candidates interviewed with the Committee, on Wednesday. Following those interviews, the PHC overwhelmingly selected one candidate to move forward in the process and had hoped to hold focus groups with the community today. As you may know, the job market is hot right now for job seekers (there are more openings than qualified candidates), and our chosen candidate has decided to pursue another job offer outside our district. While we are disappointed, we are all on Team D'Evelyn and there is no quit in us. How many times have we seen our Jags struggle, work their tails off and come out stronger on the other side? That is part of the D'Evelyn Difference - I am inspired by our student's hard work and grit and our talented staff who help them on their journey. We will keep working to find our next leader and we will not compromise until we have found the right fit for D'Evelyn. We will provide updates when we have next steps, but in the meantime, we are reposting the position on the Jeffco schools site and elsewhere, and we encourage you to refer any qualified applicants to apply online or email their interest to [email protected].

Diya Gupta - 10th Grade
I would like to nominate Diya Gupta. She has been with the team for three years now and has always been a great student with our club. This year she has been a huge help as we have a lot of newer students participating and she is very quick to offer help to the new students, sharing her experiences and knowledge. She is also always very well prepared and excited, coming with a great attitude and excitement for the activities of our club. The coaches can count on her to help out when we need to, and her insight into the cases and legal analysis we have to do for mock trial is great. At the halfway point of the session, she is averaging a career-best 10.5 points per game and adding 4.3 assists, 4.1 steals, and 1.8 rebounds per game. More than stats, she plays with a basketball IQ that is unmatched in the girl's game. Her court vision and anticipation on defense make her an invaluable player. On and off the floor, she is the unquestioned leader on our team; unanimously voted captain by her teammates. She also looks for ways to involve the younger players in our program and wants to include everyone. Always a “team first” leader, Rebecca has helped guide her team to an undefeated 13-0 overall record, the best start in school history! Her team also won championships at Mountain Vista/Rock Canyon, the Jeffco Jungle Jam, and the Palisade Winter Classic tournaments. We wouldn’t be the same team without her on-court play and her off-court personality. Thanks for all you do, Rebecca! Congrats! -Coach Olson, Head Girls Basketball Coach
Ava Anderson - 12th Grade
When Ava Anderson dives into the water, she is a game changer in a race for the AquaJags. As a senior, she is versatile in every stroke and distance, having qualified for 3A State in every individual swim event in which she has competed from the 50 Freestyle to the 500 Freestyle to the 200 Individual Medley. As the high-point leader on our team, she is a pivotal anchor leg on our highest-ranking relay that currently stands in 3rd for 3A schools. Her leadership does not stop at the pool edge. She models for the rest of the team how to constructively evaluate her races and adopt the changes needed in training. Her perseverance, calm but positive attitude and drive will ensure her future success both in and out of the pool. -Coach Carpenter, Head Girls Swim & Dive Coach
