Some of those programs are free, some programs students can receive volunteer or community service hours, and other programs cost money but students can receive college credit. On the D’Evelyn counseling website we have put together two pages devoted to these programs. Under the helpful link tabs we have Summer Programs and Volunteer Opportunities. There are a variety of programs students can get involved in, and as we mentioned, there are hundreds of programs out there. We suggest looking at University websites where your student wants to attend, talk to family friends and community businesses, and be on the lookout for announcements. Summer programs and activities always stand out on college applications and they can help your student discover a passion for what they want to kick start their career in. If you have any questions about any of these programs do not hesitate to reach out to your student’s counselor. Resume Workshop Help!! As a counseling department, we are trying to help prepare students for life after high school, and we realize one of the biggest pieces our student’s do not get experience in is resume building. We would like to hold resume workshops at D’Evelyn during 7th hour, and allow high school students to come learn how they can create a strong resume. However, we do not consider ourselves experts on the matter, and we are looking to the community to find someone or a group of people who can share their expertise and time with our students. We are planning on holding 2-3 resume workshops throughout the rest of the 2019-2020 school year. If you are a resume expert, feel like you can assist students in generating a compelling resume, or you know someone in the community who would be willing to stop by for 40 minutes to give a presentation please contact Jon Watson at [email protected]. Colorado School of Mines Girls Lead the Way Young female students who are interested in engineering, science, or math should look into the Girls Lead the Way leadership conference. Girls Lead the Way leadership conference hosted by the Society of Women Engineers collegiate and professional sections will be at Colorado School of Mines! During the conference, high school girls will interact with current Mines students and faculty in three, hour-long engineering and/or applied math and sciences activities designed to engage students with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) majors at Mines. The event also includes a major's panel, where the girls will hear highlights of each major from department representatives, a parents/guardians’ information session hosted by Mines Undergraduate Admissions (optional), and a campus tour (optional). This year’s theme is "Boldly Go Where No Woman Has Gone Before,” which reflects the conference’s goal of empowering young women with the knowledge that they are capable of pursing and thriving in STEM education and careers. This covers a continental breakfast, lunch, and activities supplies. There is no charge to parents/guardians for the optional sessions. Lunch is not included for parents/guardians. They do not want program cost to be a barrier for participation. There are a limited number of scholarships available to cover the cost of this event. If you have a girl(s) in mind who could benefit from this scholarship, please contact Kelly Knechtel[email protected] , SWE Faculty Advisor at Mines, by Friday, December 14, 2018 for a code that can be entered on the registration form. SENIORS December 1st Deadlines The next major early action/decision deadlines are coming up! For those students looking to apply early to hear back early for CSU the deadline is quickly approaching. Make sure you submit your application, request transcripts from Naviance, and submit your test scores if your institution requires it. All that needs to be done by this date for you to be considered in the early action application pool. If you have any questions on how to request transcripts or submit test scores, please come talk to your counselor. Submitting applications over winter break? If you are planning on submitting applications over winter break there are a few things you need to know. First, we want to make sure that you are paying attention to your deadlines. There are some institutions that have deadlines over the break in the early part of January. The counseling office will not be open over winter break, and we will not be here to send your transcripts and additional materials. If you are planning on submitting applications, you will need to request your transcripts ONE WEEK before winter break begins. Our deadline for transcript requests will be on December 14th! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Interested in attending CU and developing your leadership abilities? Are you planning on attending CU? Do you want to develop your leadership skills and get credit for it? PLC is a four-year leadership development program combining community, experience, and scholarship. PLC will broaden students’ horizons by enhancing their critical thinking skills, exposing them to leadership challenges, and providing opportunities to become more involved on campus and in the community. CU has an opportunity for all interested students to learn more information about the program. The Taste of PLC will be held on: Tuesday, November 27th, 5:30-7:30pm in the Wittemyer Courtroom of Wolf Law. Attendees will observe an in-action formal PLC lecture, meet current students, and enjoy light refreshments while learning about all that PLC has to offer! RSVP to Taste of PLC here: https://www.colorado.edu/plc/content/rsvp-taste-plc-2018. If you have any questions please reach out to your counselor. FAFSA Completion Now that college applications are winding down it is time to start filling out the FAFSA! FAFSA stands for free application for federal student aid. This is only an application and many institutions and scholarships require that students complete their FAFSA. The application is completely free and provides schools with and estimated amount that your family will be able to pay. Even if you do not think you will qualify for any additional aid it is important to fill this out. You never know what grants, scholarships, or other funding you are able to receive. You are not required to accept any additional funding if you do not want to. This is only the application process. You will need your family’s tax information from the 2017 tax year. You can begin your application at www.FAFSA.gov. Please contact your counselors with any questions. Scholarships Everyone wants to find a cheap way to attend college. There are a million scholarships out there and the hardest part is figuring out where to start. Counseling will be hosting a scholarship workshop for students on December 3rd. During 7th hour we will meet in the counseling office to go over where to search for scholarships, the DEF scholarships, and give students time to apply for scholarships. We will also introduce students to Going Merry. This is a non-profit organization, created by graduate students from Stanford, to help students through the scholarship process. This program is known as the common app for scholarships. They have a computer system that matches all of the students’ data to scholarships across the country. Students do not have to sign up for this program, however, we believe it will be a great resource for students when looking for scholarships. We will have four more scholarship workshops in the spring, where we will have guest speakers to help explain more about financial aid and scholarships at specific schools. We Are Looking for Candy Donations! As a counseling department we try to make our activities fun and relaxing for students at the end of the day. One of the ways we do this is by engaging them in activities and conversation with prizes to be given away. The most common and fan favorite of prizes is candy. Unfortunately, with the counseling budget candy and other treats are hard to come by. We are looking for candy bag donations for this upcoming school year. After a long day of working in the classroom we want to provide the students with a treat before they leave for the day. We would greatly appreciate any type of candy bag donation. If you are able to help support our program please drop any candy you have to donate off in the counseling office with Sue Brown, or any counselor available. We want to thank every single one of you for your support! Comments are closed.
