Our goal is to encourage students to look at the big picture of their future and provide them with new suggestions, advice, and encouragement as they explore their new goals. Our goal is to help students recognize there is more to the college process than grades. Even though grades are very important, we want students to discover their strengths, their interests, and their passion to help them be successful when high school ends. We have the privilege to collaborate with some of the best staff, parents, and community members in the state to help our students reach their maximum potential. We are very excited for the school year, and to watch students grow as they continue their journey through D’Evelyn.

As a counseling department we try to make our activities fun and relaxing for students at the end of the day. One of the ways we do this is by engaging them in activities and conversation with prizes to be given away. The most common and fan favorite of prizes is candy. Unfortunately, with the counseling budget candy and other treats are hard to come by. We are looking for candy bag donations for this upcoming school year. After a long day of working in the classroom we want to provide the students with a treat before they leave for the day. We would greatly appreciate any type of candy bag donation. If you are able to help support our program please drop any candy you have to donate off in the counseling office with Kathy Hays, or any counselor available. We want to thank every single one of you for your support! Grade Levels SENIORS We will be holding multiple workshops and activities throughout the year during 7th hour to help make the college process easier. Please keep an eye and ear out for our common application workshops, college essay workshops, scholarship workshops, and senior class meetings. We will be addressing all of your questions and concerns during this time, as well as meeting with you all individually to solidify your plan. This can be a very overwhelming time of the year, and we are here to help make the process go smoother. Do not hesitate to reach out to your counselor for questions. You will most likely need letters of recommendation for your college applications. Be sure to ask your teachers as soon as possible, and give them at least two weeks to complete the letter. You will need to provide them with the rec questionnaire, which can be found on the Naviance homepage at the bottom. You will also need to request a letter from them through Naviance. Be sure to ask them in person as well. Most teachers will not write you a letter if you do not ask them in person! If you have any questions about this process please contact your counselor. JUNIORS This will be a year full of ups and downs, with the most exciting up being you are almost to your senior year. During your junior year one of the most important pieces to focus on is your academics and the SAT. Our goal is to make sure you have all of the resources you need to be successful on the SAT and how to improve your scores. Even though junior year is known as the most difficult we want to make sure you have time to enjoy the activities you participate in, and prepare for the next level. If you have any questions about college, the process, the SAT, Khan Academy, or just how to navigate through junior year please feel free to stop by and see your counselor. For most schools you will apply to they need a letter of recommendation from your counselor. We enjoy getting to know you all so our letters can be as outstanding as you are. SOPHOMORES This is an important year to start discovering your interests, and what excites you about life outside of school. Starting to gain a stronger understanding of what you’re interested in will help you as you move along in the college/career process. We will be meeting with you all multiple times throughout the year, and we will mostly focus on the exploration of careers, your strengths, and how we can combine those to help you discover what you want to do after high school. We will be hosting lunch career sessions throughout the year, and sophomores and freshmen are required to attend at least one session. As counselors, we are always here to help you with any issues that arise throughout your time at school, and if you have any concerns outside of school. Please do not hesitate to come see your counselor if you need any assistance. FRESHMEN This is the year that grades really begin to count towards your college transcript. We highly encourage you all to get off to a strong start, and work hard in all of your classes. We will be meeting with you all multiple times throughout the year to talk about goal setting, how to plan for success, the importance of freshman year, and how to prepare your next 4 years to have a strong college application. Our goal is to help you all be successful in and out of school. This is a great time to start learning more about your likes and dislikes. We encourage you to begin exploring career options and what your interests are. We will be hosting lunch career sessions throughout the year, and all freshmen and sophomores are required to attend at least one session. If you ever need any assistance please do not hesitate to reach out to your counselor. Let us continue our discussion of stress and anxiety. It is a growing concern, and therefore will be a focus for us in this forum in the weeks to come. Information will be provided here about stress, anxiety, and coping. There will be information provided regarding what we can do for ourselves, as well as how we can support our children and students as they learn what helps them. The intention is to provide information and resources, which will be available if and when it is needed. Please know that if you need more information or more support at any time, you can contact your social emotional learning specialist or counselor in the counseling office, your family doctor, mental health professional in the community, or other support person whenever you need to do so. As we explore this topic in this way this year, let’s start by remembering one very important fact: stress is not inherently negative. I am concerned that this fact has gotten lost in our concern about rising rates of anxiety. While rising rates of anxiety are concerning, and we need to consider this trend, we don’t want to lose sight of the fact that stress is a natural and necessary part of our lives. Understanding the need for stress and how it enriches our lives can offer important perspective that actually helps us when we are facing stressful situations. The graphic to the left, from Cornell University, reminds us that we need some tension to perform. Without any measure of stress, there is no performance. Of course, too much leads to imbalance and the possibility of breakdown, but too little provides no opportunity for performance and growth. It can be immediately helpful to remember that stress provides the impetus for us to challenge ourselves and to learn new things. Without it, growth would slow. Growing coping skills and learning to move through stress and employ strength in the face of stressful situations can help to inoculate us to the more negative impacts of stress and build greater resilience. Stress does not become unhealthy until it is more than we can handle. Dr. Lisa Damour states, “Whether or not a stressor harms well-being has surprisingly little to do with the source of the stress and much more to do with whether adequate resources - personal, emotional, social, or financial - are available to address the problem.” Therefore, it is important for each of us to concentrate on growing strength, resources, and resilience. This will enable us to weather the stressors we face in our daily lives. As we think about growing strengths and coping skills, we may want to start thinking about growing the things that have worked for us before and trying new things that feel like they could be helpful. What are the things that help us to weather daily and other life stressors? The list of strengths and coping skills is a long one, thankfully, and everyone’s list will look a little different, but a few things to consider that are supported by research include:
These are but a few of the ways that we can increase our capacity to meet the challenges and opportunities of our days. We will continue to think about resources and coping skills as we continue to consider this topic. In this week’s segment of college talk we will be talking about the college matriculation of D’Evelyn students over the last four years. This is information that we track through our online program, Naviance, and we share with colleges through our school profile. We have gone ahead and broken down the matriculation list into more detail to help provide you with information on where our students are attending and getting into college. We do want to note that the information on Naviance is all student reported, and we do not always have accurate numbers pertaining to final application decisions students receive from colleges. Our numbers are accurate on which school they attend because we are required to send their final transcripts so we double check their final decision before we send those out. If you have more questions about the college matriculation please do not hesitate to reach out to your counselor. D'Evelyn Matriculation Facts:
We are extremely proud of every single student who attends and graduates from D’Evelyn. There are a copious amount of phenomenal schools all across our country, and based on feedback from students, they are more than well prepared to attend all of them. The college season can be scary, overwhelming, and frustrating. However, our favorite part of this experience is to witness students deciding on attending the schools that are the best fit for them. The best fit for you may not be the one you originally thought of, and that is the best part of this experience. We encourage students and families to explore all of their options, and discover what college or university is going to help them flourish to the best of their ability. If you have more questions about our college matriculation or the college process in general please do not hesitate to reach out. We are always looking to support families from day one. This event is for students in all grades, and we would love to see you all there. During the school day we will be having our in-state/out-of-state college fair for students to attend during their lunch period. We will have around 15 Colorado schools present during our college fair and 5 out-of-state. We encourage all students to attend the fair, and there will be prizes for students who attend. In the evening we will be hosting an event for all family members to attend. The evening of the 11th, we will have a Keynote Speaker Address and 5 guest presentations for families to choose from. We have set it up so you are able to attend 2 of the 5 sessions. All families 7th-12th grade are encouraged to attend. It is never too early to start thinking about the college process. Below we have the information of the keynote speaker and our 5 breakout sessions: Keynote Address: “College Admissions, The SAT, and Understanding How Applicants Are Evaluated” – Ben Baron Breakout Sessions:
College Visits Attention students! We have over 50 college visits already scheduled for this school year. We need students to begin signing up to meet with the college representatives who are CHOOSING to come to D’Evelyn to meet with all of our students! We have created a google document that has the list of colleges coming to our school and what days. Please click here to view the list. Attending college visits are very beneficial for multiple reasons:
How to view through Naviance: Login to Naviance (through counseling website) Username: Student ID / Password: Student ID Click on Colleges > Then Colleges Home > Scroll down to College Visits > Click on Show more Coffee with the Counselors Every year, at the beginning of the year, the counseling department likes to set up a time for parents to come into the counseling office to learn more about what we do, and to answer any questions you have about how we can best serve your students. This is typically a very informal meeting where we introduce ourselves, share our roles and responsibilities in the building, and then partake in conversation with parents. This is a great opportunity for parents to come in and ask questions about what their students work on with counselors, learn about resources we have to help students be successful, and for the counselors to receive feedback on how to strengthen the program. The date for Coffee with the Counselors will be on September 18th at 7:30am. Coffee and breakfast treats will be provided by the counseling department. We will be hosting this event in the Counseling Office and we look forward to meeting with all of you! Military Opt Out Parents of 11th and 12th graders: If you want to OPT OUT of having your students CONTACT INFORMATION given to the military, you must log into Jeffco Connect and do so. College Talk has been created to help relay information to the D’Evelyn community about college admission trends, college application assistance, how to best support your student, and what the counseling department can do to support you and your student through this process. We will focus on multiple topics throughout the year, almost all of which will derive from professional organizations, research articles, and college admission representatives. Our goal as a counseling department is to help inform the community of current trends in the world of college admissions. College acceptance is becoming more selective because colleges are experiencing an increase in applications every year, and our goal is to share what we are learning with the community. We work very closely with our college representatives and with the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) to be sure our students are prepared to attend the college that is the best fit for them. At the bottom of each column we will have upcoming dates for college visits and fairs in the area. The counseling department has constructed a mission and vision statement to help clarify and inform the community on our goals when working with students. We have worked with the administration to develop a program that fits the needs of D’Evelyn students and our community members. Counseling Post-Secondary VISION: High school counselors will work with interested students on their post-secondary options including working and supporting students to find their BEST FIT College. Upcoming College Fairs and School Visits:
The beginning of another academic year is here again - at D’Evelyn and across the country. This time of year can be so exciting, fun, full of activity, and at times also stressful. We may meet a new academic year with a variety of emotions, but it is my sincere hope for each of you that one of them is excitement. We will have many opportunities this year for learning, growth, and community building. Whether our primary role is as a student, parent, or staff member, we will be spending time together this year advancing our learning and creating space for the learning of others. It is exciting to think about regardless of your primary institution of learning, and particularly so as a member of the D’Evelyn community. D’Evelyn Junior Senior High School provides a rigorous liberal arts education to all students, and prepares students for post-secondary options and full community engagement. The D’Evelyn philosophy is “based on the belief that all students, not just an elite group, should be held to rigorous academic and behavioral standards, and that all students can achieve in a challenging program” (FD, p.4). It is truly a joy to be a part of a community engaged in this work, regardless of specific role. Being a student, parent, or staff member at a great school does not, however, make the beginning or any other part of the school year stress free. The truth of the matter is that stress is a part of life, and an essential one. However, there are times when stress can feel overwhelming, can contribute to anxiety, and can impact daily life. We do hear about high levels of stress experienced by students here with relative frequency, so will be providing some information about stress and anxiety, as well as things we can all do to increase resiliency, in the weeks to come, so please stay tuned. And please stop by the counseling office if you need any support at any time! Welcome Back!
Welcome back to school D’Evelyn families! We are excited for the beginning of the school year and to witness all of the amazing work our students will accomplish. We hope you all had a wonderful summer, and we want to share some information with you about the year to come. We will be meeting with each class either as a whole group, smaller groups, and/or individually as the year progresses. The calendar committee has put the dates we are meeting with each class in the planner to eliminate the element of surprise. All students will be required to attend the appropriate class session for their grade. We view this time to help students plan for their future, and prepare for their post-secondary options. We truly value our time with students and recognize time is precious. Our goal is to encourage students to look at the big picture of their future and provide them with new suggestions, advice, and encouragement as they explore their new goals. Our goal is to help students recognize there is more to the college process than grades. We will be meeting once each semester to work on your Individual Career and Academic Plans. One thing to remember is that it is important for you to continue to develop good work habits and study skills as you prepare for high school. If you would like to talk about this further, please come see me. Also, keep in mind that it is important to enjoy yourself, and the best way to do that is to get involved in a sport or extracurricular activity that you enjoy! I consider it a privilege to be your counselor. Mr. Northway 7th GRADERS Welcome seventh graders! This is the beginning of your six year adventure at D’Evelyn! Every year will be new and different and each year will have many opportunities for you to learn and enjoy what this school has to offer. Not only “school,” but there are many clubs, sports, and extracurricular activities for you to become involved with. D’Evelyn requires a lot from its students, but when you talk to the upper classmen they will tell you that it’s worth it. Please keep in mind that I am available to help you with anything that may come up. If you have difficulty in one of your classes, with friends, lockers, or anything please come see me and we can work on solutions together. You can come in and see me before school, after school, at lunch, or during a passing period. You will not be counted tardy anytime you need to see me during part of a period. I consider it a privilege to be your counselor. Mr. Northway Counseling Calendar
Preparing for the AP Tests We have one more week of AP testing. Below are the dates and times for each AP test that is offered:
Schedule Changes for 2019-2020 Counselors will be taking schedule changes for next school year beginning on August 6th, 2019. We will be in our offices on registration day to assist students with schedule changes. Remember there are exceptions to schedule changes, and we are not always able to accommodate all requests. If you have any questions about this process, please contact your counselor. SENIORS Make sure you are finalizing those college applications and begin preparing for the next step. This is an exciting time of year getting to decide the next steps in your young and very bright futures. However, this time can also be overwhelming. Talk to financial aid offices for scholarship opportunities and other financial assistance. If you have any questions about your next steps please contact your counselor! We have a ton of scholarships in our office for students to apply to! If you need scholarships and are unable to make it to the workshops stop by counseling to look at the opportunities! Application deadlines are approaching quickly so don’t wait! For those of you who have not payed your transcript fees you need to pay those to receive your cap and gown, so make sure you get those paid ASAP! We want to wish you all the best, and we know that you will go on and do great things. You have been a pleasure to work with, and you all will be missed! JUNIORS Your junior year is quickly coming to an end and before you know it the college application process will be upon you. We highly encourage you to start thinking about your essays over summer, to visit college campuses, re-take the SAT or take the ACT if you want another shot at standardized tests, and to talk to your counselor before break if you have any questions. The college application process is supposed to be a fun experience for your families, not a stressful one. We are here to answer any questions you might have. The more you complete over the summer the less work you have to do in the fall. Information about future SAT or ACT test dates can be found at SAT.org or ACT.org. You can also find links to those websites on the counseling website. If students want to begin working on their common application, which is an application that over 750 schools are using, they can begin filling that out at commonapp.org. If your student is applying to at least two schools that utilize the Common Application, it is a good idea to apply through the Common App instead of the school directly. All of this information can be found online on the institution’s website directly, Naviance, or the Common App website. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your counselor. SOPHOMORES Start participating in meaningful summer activities. Whether those are internships, volunteer experiences, a paying job, or other extracurricular activities. We want you to start building your resume for the college process and this is one of the best summers to engage in meaningful activities. Summer is also a great time to start visiting colleges to find out what type of school environment will best suit you. Your PSAT information should be arriving around the middle to the end of the month and once we have your results we will immediately send them your way. Once your scores are released you should be able to see them on your College Board account as well. If you do not have an account make sure you sign up on their website www.collegeboard.org , and your scores will be linked to your account. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the counseling department. FRESHMEN We hope that you have a wonderful summer break and you start exploring your interests in career fields. Even though college may seem far away, it is never too early to start discovering what type of careers will interest you. Summer is the best time to find internships, begin working, shadow professionals, and talk to members in the community about their careers. Counseling Calendar
For All Preparing for the AP Tests The AP testing dates are approaching quickly. Below are the dates and times for each AP test that is offered:
Schedule Changes for 2019-2020 Counselors will be taking schedule changes for next school year beginning on August 2nd 2018. We will be in our offices on registration day to assist students with schedule changes. Remember there are exceptions to schedule changes, and we are not always able to accommodate all requests. If you have any questions about this process please contact your counselor. SENIORS May 1st is college decision day! The majority of schools require that you make your decision by May 1st. Make sure you are finalizing those college applications and begin preparing for the next step. Also be sure to stop by counseling to fill out the senior destination form. We want to know where you are going next year and what your plans are! If your student is applying to at least two schools that utilize the Common Application we recommend to apply through the Common App instead of the school directly. All of this information can be found online on the institutions website directly, Naviance, or the Common App website. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact your counselor. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the counseling department. FRESHMEN We hope that you have a wonderful summer break and you start exploring your interests in career fields. Our April challenge promises to possibly be our most fun yet... this month we challenge ourselves to laugh more! There is a mounting body of evidence that laughter really is the best medicine. We know inherently how good it feels to laugh, and the data tells us we are right. There are short term and long-term benefits of laughter. Laughter has been shown to stimulate circulation, soothe tension, relieve pain, improve immunity, and increase personal satisfaction. So, let’s find ways to increase our laughter this month! Most of us know what makes us giggle and what brings on the belly laugh, but we often aren’t intentional about increasing the laughter in our daily lives (while increasing the laughter of those around us). Our challenge this month is to create that intention. If you need a little help getting started, consider some of the following:
Start right away. Laugh hard. Laugh often. It’s good for you! Have fun! COUNSELING CALENDAR

If you can help support our program please drop any candy you have to donate off in the counseling office with Sue Brown, or any counselor available. We want to thank every single one of you for your support! New Summer Programs FBI Teen Academy This summer, the FBI Denver Division will be hosting two Teen Academies in Colorado, one in Denver, and another in Colorado Springs. We wanted to reach out to share more information about the academies. Should you have students who may make a good fit for this immersive program, we encourage you to share it with them. Of course, if you have any questions, feel free to send them our way. The application deadline is April 15, 2019. Below is a link to the press release and application for your convenience. https://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices/denver/news/press-releases/wanted-by-fbi-denver-high-school-sophomores-juniors-seniors-for-teen-academies BOLT (Bioengineering Opportunities & Leadership Training) The University of Colorado has developed a summer program for students interested in bioengineering. The information night will be on May 4th and is a great presentation for parents who want to learn more about bioengineering, learn more about CU’s program, and to learn what your child will be learning through the CU program. https://ucdenverdata.formstack.com/forms/adult_bolt The University of Colorado Department of Bioengineering will also be hosting an open house on April 19th from 4-6pm. If you and your student(s) would like to attend the event you can RSVP for it by going to the link listed below. https://ucdenverdata.formstack.com/forms/bioe_rsvp SENIORS FAFSA Completion Are you a senior looking to attend a 2- or 4-year institution? Then you should be filling out your FAFSA! There are a lot of misconceptions about the FAFSA and many reasons why families elect to not fill it out. The biggest myth about filling out the FAFSA is: My family makes too much money for me to receive any aid. Regardless of family income or any other reason you can think of to not complete the FAFSA, here are some reasons why you should.
JUNIORS SAT Information The SAT is here and will take place at school on April 9th. There are some important pieces of information we want to share with you all leading up to the exam. The state of Colorado pays for all juniors to take the SAT on April 9th, so the test is completely free! We highly recommend all juniors to take the test even if they have already taken the SAT and they are pleased with their score. Students can bring calculators, snacks, water, and a number 2 pencil. They will not need to bring anything else that day. They will not be allowed to work on homework or any other assignments until the test has been collected and the rooms dismissed. We also recommend preparing for the SAT by utilizing all the free resources that are available. Khan Academy is a company that has paired with College Board (creators of the SAT) to provide free individualized practice for all students. This is a great tool for students to use in their preparation for the exam. There are multiple test prep companies that students can utilize where they can receive group help, individualized tutoring, or online practice. On the counseling website there is a link for our SAT/ACT page, which provides more information and resources for families. Please contact counseling with any questions. College Visits Juniors, it is about that time to really start vamping up your college preparation. One of the best ways to help you discover which college experience will be best for you is to start visiting campuses that you are interested in. Experts say that visiting a college is one of the top factors in discovering the right fit. With spring semester upon us, and the final semester before you start applying for college this is one of the best times to tour college campuses. Whether you want to stay in state or travel to the coasts, we highly recommend that you visit the campuses you are interested in. You can sign up for a structured visit with a tour guide or go and explore the campus on your own. Parents: Don't miss our college case study on April 17 at 6 pm: you & your students will make the admissions decisions for others students & really learn what happens in the process when your application is reviewed. Danielle Wells from Boston College will guide you through this complex process. RSVP to counseling, space limited.
As introduced in August, we are challenging members of our D'Evelyn community to engage regularly in practices that can raise one's overall sense of well-being. This series of challenges continues to be offered to students, staff, and community members. This gives us all the opportunity to not only raise our own sense of well-being, but also encourage others in our families, work places, and community to do the same. Our March challenge is to spend time this month engaging in some form of creative expression. It matters less what your preferred creative activity is than it does to take the time to engage in it. So, what brings you joy? Do you enjoy drawing? Or crafting? What have you always wanted to learn? Whether you have always wanted to learn how to play the guitar or would rather learn to knit, let yourself learn this month. Whether you love to dance or prefer to write poetry, give yourself time to do that this month! We tend to pursue these and other creative activities simply because they bring us pleasure. That, in and of itself, is reason enough to do them as often as possible. These activities, however, have an added benefit: they tend to give a boost to our overall sense of well-being, which is the purpose of our monthly challenges. Creativity makes us happy and it is good for us! There is a connection between art and healing. There is satisfaction in creating something beautiful. Several studies have found that writing can help one to manage negative emotions. Musical training has been shown to improve the connectivity between the hemispheres of the brain, while dance can boost self-confidence and improve physical fitness. The benefits abound and leave few reasons for us to keep putting off something that we enjoy and can benefit from. So, whether your personal passion is cooking or quilting, set aside some extra time this month to enjoy that activity. Join us in being creative this month. Record your experiences as you wish and share them with others. Share your experiences with your family members, with your friends, online, or with us through the counseling Instagram account. And be on the lookout for our next challenge - which you can add to this one, or with which you can replace this one for the month of April! Thanks and have fun! Counseling Calendar

Summer Programs One of the best ways for students to stand out on college applications is to participate in summer programs offered by universities around the country. The majority of major universities and colleges offer some form of a summer program. There are programs that are only a week or two long, and they provide students a small glimpse into college life, students attend seminars, participate in research activities, and engage in hands on activities. There are other programs that act as a college summer course where students earn college credit by attending classes and completing course work. These programs are typically offered for 9th-11th grade students, however, there have been some programs that offer experiences for Junior High students as well. This is a great way for students to explore colleges, start to discover their interests, and get a taste of college course work. Under the “Helpful Links” section on the D’Evelyn Counseling website there is a link for Summer Programs. This section will have a list of the programs that send information to D’Evelyn and from around the area. You can also research to see if the university or college you want to go to has summer programs by exploring their websites. If you have more questions come stop by the counseling office. SENIORS FAFSA Completion Are you a senior looking to attend a 2 or 4 year institution? Then you should be filling out your FAFSA! Scholarship Workshop Are you stressing about how to pay for college? Starting in the Spring semester we will be hosting scholarship workshops for students. We have arranged 4 dates throughout the semester during 7th hours to have students come down and explore scholarships. We will provide you with multiple data bases to look at, and help you narrow down options. The remaining dates for our second semester meetings are as followed: 3/11 and 4/1. If you are looking for help on where to look, how to apply, or just want some peace and quiet to complete an application come down to counseling on those dates! JUNIORS SAT Information The SAT is right around the corner with the test taking place at school on April 9th. These next few months will fly by, and the test will be here before we know it. The state of Colorado pays for all juniors to take the SAT on April 9th, so the test is completely free! We highly recommend all juniors to take the test even if they have already taken the SAT and they are pleased with their score. D'Evelyn will also be hosting a SAT Prep course in partnership with College Drive. This SAT Prep course will meet every Tuesday for four weeks at D’Evelyn starting on February 26th. The course will be from 1:45 – 3:15pm on 2/26, 3/5, 3/12, and 3/19. The total price for the course is $129. We have a new instructor for this course, and this can be a great way for students to gain more information about the exam. We have flyers posted around the school and in the counseling office. If you would like to register for this course please call 720-496-2244. We also recommend that students begin preparing for the SAT by utilizing all of the free resources that are available to them.
