Written by: Jerry McWhorter, Assistant Principal/Athletic Director While the start of the 2020-21 School Year may look quite different than any school year your students have ever experienced, I do want to take the opportunity to welcome everyone back. My hope is that you and your families are doing well, you had a decent summer, and you are ready to move forward with your careers at D’Evelyn Jr/Sr High School. As we hit the ground running, I wanted to focus on one of the important pillars of the high school experience and that is Athletics and Activities. This past summer a number of our athletes were able to start workouts, with some strict guidelines. With the work of our District Athletic Directors, the Staff of the Colorado High School Activities Association, the Governor of Colorado, Jeffco School Administration, and of course our High School Coaches, plans were put together to allow our student/athletes to follow a 4 step process for begin workouts. Strict focus was put on following rules to prevent the spread of COVID, including:
As summer workouts have concluded and with some hard decisions ahead of them, that same group worked toward a plan that included high school athletics for the school year. Bottom line is that things will look very different this school year, which begins with 4 seasons, A, B, C, and D, traditional seasons for some sports have changed, the number of contests allowed has been shortened, the number of players on a team during game day is smaller, the number of spectators allowed to come watch will be smaller, and a number of additional changes will occur as well, for example the start and finish of a Cross Country Meet will look a little different. The good news to all of this is that at least the student/athletes are getting a chance to participate. So your next question might be, what does this Season A, look like? Season A has already begun, this includes Softball, Boys Tennis, Boys Golf, and Boys and Girls Cross Country. The season will conclude around mid-October. At that point there will essentially be a 2 month break where there will be no athletics whatsoever. Season B will begin in the beginning of January and will include Basketball, Hockey, Wrestling, Skiing, Spirit, and Girls Swimming. Season B will conclude in early March. Season C will begin the 1st of March and includes Football, Field Hockey, Gymnastics, Boys Soccer, Women’s Volleyball, and Unified Bowling. This 3rd season of the year will conclude late April to early May. The final season of the School Year, Season D, will began in late April and end in June. Season D includes Baseball, Girls Golf, Lacrosse, Girls Soccer, Boys Swimming, Girls Tennis, Track and Boys Volleyball. So that is it in a nut shell, obviously all of this is subject to change depending on the state of our world. Supporting Jags Athletics this school year will take on a whole new meaning, and while the number of fans allowed to attend a contest may be limited, there are always creative ways to show your support! GO JAGS !!!! Comments are closed.
