Written by: Lisa Bell, Teacher Librarian During the month of April, our focus is on creating and maintaining one’s Digital Footprint & Identity. A digital footprint refers to the imprints left while online. It is important to help our students understand that the information they share on the Internet is permanent and can never be fully erased. In today’s world, it is not uncommon for employers and colleges to rely on simple Google searches to make initial judgments about applicants. According to Metropolitan State University, 70% of recruiters have admitted to denying a potential candidate due to information found on their social media accounts. Students today are Internet users and it’s important for them to understand that WE should both shape and protect our own digital footprints. As an adult in a student’s life, you can help guide positive choices in this direction. Talk to your student(s) about what is NEVER okay to share online. With older students, it is okay to be more specific and have detailed conversations around their digital footprint.
