CONGRATULATIONS OCTOBER HEART OF D'EVELYN WINNERS!
By: Greg Kottcamp, Assistant Principal D’Evelyn will be starting to send out weekly D & F Communications through the School Messenger system starting this coming Friday, October 29. The reason for this additional communication is to give parents another tool for progress monitoring. The School Messenger system does not allow us to tell parents that have more than one child at D’Evelyn, which child is struggling. Nor does it allow us to tell parents in which class/es the student is earning the D or F grade. Parents will need to log into Infinite Campus to determine which student and in which course the student is struggling. What can you learn from looking at a teacher’s gradebook? If you receive this message, we would encourage you to sit with your child and use Infinite Campus to see where he or she is struggling. Is your child earning a D or F because they have multiple missing or late assignments, or was it one major assignment that they struggled with. Or is your child struggling with tests and quizzes? Looking for patterns can be useful for helping your child develop strategies for improvement. Every teacher’s grade book is unique in how it is organized and it usually takes a moment to make sense of it. When looking at a gradebook in Infinite Campus you will want to not only look for missing or late work, but also how the gradebook is weighted. Most teachers use a weighted gradebook, which often gives more value to tests, quizzes, or essays. If a student is missing or did poorly on an assignment in a category of the gradebook that counts for a heavy portion of the grade, this will have a large impact on the total grade. If you see that your child is struggling with tests and quizzes you might work on test review skills. Sometimes teachers will make comments in the gradebook for particular assignments. Students don’t always do a good job of reading those comments and/or acting on them. Please encourage your student to read the comments, as this is feedback that can often improve his or her performance on the next task. Please keep in mind that the gradebook is showing all assignments that were turned in on time. If a student is absent, or turns in an assignment late, it will not show-up in the gradebook until the next time a teacher enters grades. Many teachers catch-up on grading during weekends, so be patient. Website tools: After looking over the gradebook, we would encourage parents and students to look over the teacher’s website. Most teachers are using Google Classroom, but some are also using google sites, or Schoology. Since students are the ones with access to their Google Classrooms, it would be useful to have them show you each teacher’s Google Classroom. The websites are where you can often find missing assignments, notes, or other support material that can help students to complete their work or to study for tests and quizzes. A-B-C Communication If after talking with your student and looking at the teacher’s website, you and your child still have questions - we like to use the A-B-C style of communication. Ideally, we would have the students email their teachers with questions, and “CC” parents on that email. Self-advocating can be a challenge for students but it is just as valuable as the other skills we teach. If your child is having trouble reaching out to a teacher through email, parents can work with their students to write the email together to model the process. In all communications, it is important to presume positive. We are all trying to work together to help our students be successful. By: Eric McCaslin-Hahn, Assistant Principal and Activities Director Greetings D’Evelyn Community, As we finish up Spirit Week, I wanted to reflect on an incredible and inspiring start to our school year. Coming out of Covid, we didn’t know what the year would look like, but we have been pleased with how things have gone. Here is an overview of the different events and reflections that have occurred during the first 3 months of the school year. -Students and staff are excited to be back in person. It has been an adjustment for students and staff going back to 5 days a week in person and having the traditional 6 period schedule with the 7th hour model. All are happy not doing block schedules, and no one is missing virtual learning! -Teachers have done a masterful job blending the skills they learned in virtual learning with what they have traditionally done in person with classes. Google Classroom, PairDeck, and other online tools have helped in conjunction with traditional classroom lectures and activities. -The D’Evelyn DASH was the largest and most successful it has ever been! We had more High School Teams enter the team portion than ever before, and the most runners ever in the Community 5K and 2K. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make that a great experience for our community. -Parent/Teacher Conferences were a success. Wednesday, 9/29, was in person in the gym and Thursday, 9/30, was virtual. Both nights were well attended and there were positive reviews from both parents and staff. -We just wrapped up the PSAT with the Juniors. That test helped prepare them for the SAT in the Spring and was the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship. -D’Evelyn was again the top performing school in the State based on PSAT and SAT scores from last Spring for 9th, 10th and 11th grades. -Marching Band has been on a roll! They won the Jeffco 3A League Championship and received the highest score out of all the Jeffco Schools, regardless of classification. They went to Midland, Texas, and won 1st place in their division. They hosted the Big Cat Invite last Saturday and they had a record turnout. The NAAC was packed all day long. They received the highest score in the State for 3A at Regionals Tuesday night. They will compete for the State Championship at CSU Pueblo on Monday, November 1st. -The Fall Play finished up on Saturday, October 16th. They had 3 performances of The Frogs and it was well attended and wonderfully produced and performed. -Sophomore Boys Golfer Taj Kumar qualified for the State Golf Tournament. He competed in the two day tournament at City Park Golf Course and scored well for his first time at State! -Boys Tennis had a 4th place finish at the State Tournament this fall. The team also won the Vicki Matarazzo Sportsmanship Award. Great job Boy’s Tennis! #1 Singles Aswaanth Karuppasamy finished in 2nd place, #2 Singles Carter Smith finished in 3rd place, and #1 Doubles Team Phoenix Lee and John Reschl finished in 3rd place. It was a great team showing for the Jags! -Girls Softball was seeded 7th in the Final 16 of the State Tournament, and they played Roosevelt High School in the first round. -Both the Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams finished in 3rd place at Regionals, which qualifies them for the State Meet, which will take place on Saturday, October 30th in Colorado Springs. Adrian Lopez was the top finisher for our boys and finished 2nd place overall! And Jett Cowee was the top finisher for our girls and finished 10th place overall! -The Girls Volleyball Team wrapped up the Jeffco 4A Conference Championship Thursday night with a victory over Golden! -The Boys Soccer Team finished the regular season in 2nd place in the Conference, and they await their seeding for the State Tournament. -The Football Team has been playing hard this season and has come away with a few impressive wins. They have Senior Night on Friday, October 29th against Northfield. The game will start at 7:30 pm and will take place at Trailblazer Stadium. -We just finished Homecoming Week. The Student Council did an incredible job planning the week with fun dress up themes, after school activities, a Pep Rally Friday and the Homecoming Dance on Saturday. The Football game Friday was well attended by students, staff, families and alumni. At halftime the Marching Band, Dance Team and Cheerleaders performed, and the HC royalty was crowned. This is just the start of another successful and enjoyable year at D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High. I’m thrilled to be part of this incredible community! I look forward to a fantastic rest of the school year. Go Jags! By: Dan Wille, Assistant Principal D’Evelyn has an account with the Schoolpool carpooling service through the Denver Regional Council of Governments. This free service helps connect you with families in your neighborhood to share in the responsibilities of getting the kids to school and back via carpooling, walking, biking or riding either RTD or the school bus together. We ask all families in need of carpools and/or those interested in offering rides to other D’Evelyn students to register on the D’Evelyn’s Schoolpool account. For more information about Schoolpool, call 303-458-7665, email at: [email protected], and/or watch this Way To Go instructional video. As a reminder, the school is open to students as early as 6:45am. Additionally, students can stay after school in the library until 3:30pm Monday-Thursday, and until 3:00pm on Fridays. PSAT/NMSQT Information: On October 13th, juniors will have the opportunity to take the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), an important test that provides many benefits that can help him or her along the path to college. All D’Evelyn juniors are automatically registered for the PSAT/NMSQT and no action is needed at this time for your student to take the assessment. The PSAT/NMSQT offers your student the opportunity to enter competitions for scholarships that can help pay for college. The PSAT/NMSQT is also great practice for the SAT. They’ll also get personalized feedback on their performance to help improve their skills before taking the SAT. In addition, students receive free college planning tools to help them start their college search and feedback on the types of AP courses for which they may be particularly well prepared. Taking these college-level classes can help students earn college credit while still in high school and provide them with a competitive advantage in the college admission process. You can learn more about the PSAT/NMSQT on the College Board’s Website. If your child is interested in hearing from colleges and universities across the country that are looking for students like him or her, remind your child to opt in to Student Search Service when he or she takes the test. The test will begin promptly at 7:35am and conclude by 12:00pm. Juniors will not have any classes and will be dismissed after the test ends. See HERE for additional logistical information that has already been communicated to your student. Please contact Assistant Principal Dan Wille with questions ([email protected]). |
