By: Eric McCaslin-Hahn, Assistant Principal and Activities Director Greetings D’Evelyn Community, As we finish up Spirit Week, I wanted to reflect on an incredible and inspiring start to our school year. Coming out of Covid, we didn’t know what the year would look like, but we have been pleased with how things have gone. Here is an overview of the different events and reflections that have occurred during the first 3 months of the school year. -Students and staff are excited to be back in person. It has been an adjustment for students and staff going back to 5 days a week in person and having the traditional 6 period schedule with the 7th hour model. All are happy not doing block schedules, and no one is missing virtual learning! -Teachers have done a masterful job blending the skills they learned in virtual learning with what they have traditionally done in person with classes. Google Classroom, PairDeck, and other online tools have helped in conjunction with traditional classroom lectures and activities. -The D’Evelyn DASH was the largest and most successful it has ever been! We had more High School Teams enter the team portion than ever before, and the most runners ever in the Community 5K and 2K. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make that a great experience for our community. -Parent/Teacher Conferences were a success. Wednesday, 9/29, was in person in the gym and Thursday, 9/30, was virtual. Both nights were well attended and there were positive reviews from both parents and staff. -We just wrapped up the PSAT with the Juniors. That test helped prepare them for the SAT in the Spring and was the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship. -D’Evelyn was again the top performing school in the State based on PSAT and SAT scores from last Spring for 9th, 10th and 11th grades. -Marching Band has been on a roll! They won the Jeffco 3A League Championship and received the highest score out of all the Jeffco Schools, regardless of classification. They went to Midland, Texas, and won 1st place in their division. They hosted the Big Cat Invite last Saturday and they had a record turnout. The NAAC was packed all day long. They received the highest score in the State for 3A at Regionals Tuesday night. They will compete for the State Championship at CSU Pueblo on Monday, November 1st. -The Fall Play finished up on Saturday, October 16th. They had 3 performances of The Frogs and it was well attended and wonderfully produced and performed. -Sophomore Boys Golfer Taj Kumar qualified for the State Golf Tournament. He competed in the two day tournament at City Park Golf Course and scored well for his first time at State! -Boys Tennis had a 4th place finish at the State Tournament this fall. The team also won the Vicki Matarazzo Sportsmanship Award. Great job Boy’s Tennis! #1 Singles Aswaanth Karuppasamy finished in 2nd place, #2 Singles Carter Smith finished in 3rd place, and #1 Doubles Team Phoenix Lee and John Reschl finished in 3rd place. It was a great team showing for the Jags! -Girls Softball was seeded 7th in the Final 16 of the State Tournament, and they played Roosevelt High School in the first round. -Both the Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams finished in 3rd place at Regionals, which qualifies them for the State Meet, which will take place on Saturday, October 30th in Colorado Springs. Adrian Lopez was the top finisher for our boys and finished 2nd place overall! And Jett Cowee was the top finisher for our girls and finished 10th place overall! -The Girls Volleyball Team wrapped up the Jeffco 4A Conference Championship Thursday night with a victory over Golden! -The Boys Soccer Team finished the regular season in 2nd place in the Conference, and they await their seeding for the State Tournament. -The Football Team has been playing hard this season and has come away with a few impressive wins. They have Senior Night on Friday, October 29th against Northfield. The game will start at 7:30 pm and will take place at Trailblazer Stadium. -We just finished Homecoming Week. The Student Council did an incredible job planning the week with fun dress up themes, after school activities, a Pep Rally Friday and the Homecoming Dance on Saturday. The Football game Friday was well attended by students, staff, families and alumni. At halftime the Marching Band, Dance Team and Cheerleaders performed, and the HC royalty was crowned. This is just the start of another successful and enjoyable year at D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High. I’m thrilled to be part of this incredible community! I look forward to a fantastic rest of the school year. Go Jags! Comments are closed.
