ON THE ROAD TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT D’Evelyn Senior restarted its Forensics/Speech and Debate program this year under the leadership of Mrs. Tammie Peters. With a group of 10 students, the Jaguar speakers placed 1st in the Jeffco League Tournament back in December and qualified four students for the State Tournament, to be held March 18-19. The team has made its presence known in a big way throughout the season, being in final rounds at nearly every tournament where we competed. The varsity season began in November. All of our tournaments were virtual until February–we met at D’Evelyn and each student competed in a different room over Zoom. At the Cherry Creek Classic on November 6, 2021, Kendall Miller went to finals in Informative Speaking, placing 6th overall. Next, November 19-20, at Eaglecrest’s Raptor Rumble. Kendall Miller went to finals again, this time placing 4th. Lila Gelwick went to finals in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and placed 3rd overall. First semester prepared the team for the Jeffco League Tournament on December 11. As a team, the Jaguars won the Sweepstakes Award and the league title! Sophie Liebman placed 1st in Informative Speaking and Kendall Miller placed 2nd. Lila Gelwick was 2nd in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and Tae Kim was 2nd in Extemporaneous Speaking. Debaters Sam Lucero, NickSteeves, and Mia Wu won excellent recognitions. After the holidays, the Forensics/Speech & Debate team was back at work. January 7-8, we attended the Patriot Games Tournament hosted by George Washington High School. Two students made it to finals in Informative Speaking: Sophie Liebman placed 3rd and Kendall Miller placed 5th. Next on January 15, the Speech team attended the Lowell Sharp Invitational hosted by Jefferson County Coaches. Sophie Liebman and Kendall Miller placed 2nd and 3rd in Informative Speaking. Tae Kim placed 3rd in International Extemp. Finally, in February, we were able to participate carefully in live-in-person tournaments. On February 5, we attended the Denver Public Schools Invitational at Denver South High School. Mia Wu made it to finals in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and placed 4th. Kendall Miller placed 5th in Informative Speaking. February 12 saw Sophie Liebman place 3rd in Informative Speaking at the Cherry Creek Bruin Bonanza. And at our final regular tournament of the season, the 3rd Annual Never Again Tournament (that we co-hosted with Eaglecrest and Chatfield) on February 19 Tae Kim place 4th overall in International Extemp. On March 4-5, we attended the Region 2 State Qualifying Tournament. Lila Gelwick and Mia Wu both qualified in Lincoln-Douglas Debate for the State Tournament at Cherokee Trail on March 18-19. Sam Lucero and Reilly Harrington will also represent D’Evelyn at the State Tournament in Congressional debate. Kendall Miller, Sophie Liebman, and Tae Kim earned alternate positions. Finally, at our National Qualifying District Tournament, Tae Kim was in finals of International Extemp and Sophie Liebman was in finals of Informative Speaking. Comments are closed.
